Winifred Altena, 82, of Sioux Center, Iowa, formerly of Ireton, passed away on Saturday, July 20, 2013 at the Sioux Center Community Hospital.
Memorial Service will be 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, July 24, 2013 at the Christian Reformed Church in Ireton with Rev. Norlyn Van Beek officiating. Burial will be prior to the service at the Valley View Cemetery in Rock Valley. Visitation will begin at noon Tuesday, with the family present from 6:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the church. The Porter Funeral Home in Ireton is assisting the family.
Winifred was born on June 27, 1931 in Rock Valley, Iowa, the daughter of Bert and Winnie (Hubers) Vanden Berg. She attended the Rock Valley Christian School through the eighth grade.
She married Dick Altena on February 15, 1950 in Rock Valley, Iowa. Most of her married life was spent in Ireton, Iowa where she spent many years as the custodian of the Ireton Christian School and the Christian Reformed Church. She spent time as a waitress where she enjoyed meeting and visiting with others. Winifred was an active member of the Christian Reformed Church where she was involved with the Ladies Aid and Coffee Break. In 2008, she moved to the Homestead in Sioux Center, Iowa.
She enjoyed spending time in her flower garden and with her children and grandchildren. She will be remembered for all the prayers she said for others, her wonderful hugs, and her great letters.
She is survived by her loving husband of 63 years, Dick; her children, Wanetta (Rod) Vander Plas of Ireton, Iowa, Eunice (David) Koopmans of Maurice, Iowa, Harley (Shelly) Altena of Ellsworth, Nebraska, Joella (Rick) Wieseler of Ireton, Iowa, Lori (Rod) Bolkema of Boyden, Iowa, and Audrey (Mike) Vander Stelt of Maurice, Iowa; seventeen grandchildren; twenty-two great grandchildren; and many nephews and nieces.
She was preceded in death by her parents; siblings; infant daughter, Winetta; and two great grandsons.
In lieu of flowers, the family is asking that memorials be given to the Christian Reformed Church in Ireton, Iowa.
