William "Bill" John Plantage

Sheldon, IA: William J. “Bill” Plantage, 98, of Sheldon, formerly of Sioux Center and Rock Valley, Iowa, passed away Monday, February 17, 2025, at Cobble Creek Assisted Living in Sheldon. A visitation will be held Saturday, February 22, from 9:30-10:30 AM at Carmel Reformed Church of rural Rock Valley. A funeral service will follow at 11:00 AM at Carmel Reformed Church with Pastor Ron Boersema and Pastor Steve Van Wyhe officiating. Following the service a luncheon will be held at the church and will conclude with burial and military rites at the Carmel Reformed Church Cemetery.

 

 Memorials may be directed to Village Northwest Unlimited in Sheldon (https://villagenorthwest.org/). Porter Funeral Home of Rock Valley has been entrusted with the funeral arrangements for Mr. Plantage.

 

   William J. Plantage was born April 10, 1926, the son of Gerrit and Della (Van Veldhuizen) Plantage. He grew up near Carmel, Iowa and attended country school near there. He married Ann Irene Brunsting on September 14, 1950. A few weeks after that he was drafted in the US Army for 2 years, of which he spent 17 months in Germany.

 

   They then farmed near Carmel for 23 years and after leaving the farm he was a full-time truck driver until he retired. Following retirement, he worked part time for a farmer.

 

   Bill was a lifetime member of the Carmel Reformed Church where he served as a Deacon for several years. He enjoyed fishing and playing cards. He also did a lot of volunteer work for Justice For All and Hope Haven in Rock Valley and Village Northwest in Sheldon. He enjoyed being on the road as he gave many people rides to their doctor’s appointments.

 

   Bill is survived by his daughter, Shirleen Plantage of Fridley, Minnesota; 2 sisters-in-law, Betty Brunsting and Lyneen Brunsting; and a host of family and friends.

 

   He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Ann who died in 2000; brother, John and his wife Jurena; parents-in-law, Luke T. and Rosena Brunsting; 6 brothers-in-law, Ted, Harvey, Vernon, Ed, Al, and Gerald; 6 sisters-in-law, Leona, Shirley, Alvina, Nell, Trudy, and Bessie.
