Rock Valley, IA: Wilbert Vanden Bos, 82, of Rock Valley, IA died Sunday, September 7, 2014 at Fellowship Village in Inwood, IA. Memorial service will be held Saturday, September 13, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. at Faith Reformed Church in Rock Valley with Rev. Stan Groothof officiating. Visitation, with family present, will be held Friday, September 12, 2014 at Porter Funeral Home in Rock Valley from 6-8 p.m. The family will also be present for a visitation at Mount Funeral Home in Platte, SD on Friday from 12:00 1:30 p.m. Porter Funeral Home and Mount Funeral Home are assisting the family. Condolences may be left for the family at www.porterfuneralhomes.com. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be designated to Gideons, Dakota Christian in Platte, SD, or Brothers in Blue.
Wilbert John Vanden Bos was born April 17, 1932 in rural Platte, SD to John and Lena (Austhof) Vanden Bos. Wilbert grew up at Platte, SD. Wilbert served in the US Army in Korea where he was wounded March 22, 1953, losing his sight in October 1953 due to injuries. He married Betty Van Zee April 6, 1955. They moved to Sioux Falls, SD in 1962 where he went to Sioux Falls College and received a BA and a Masters from Mankato State College. They also lived in Michigan before moving to Rock Valley, IA where he worked at Hope Haven and then started Creative Living Center with two partners. He retired in 1993. Wilbert and Betty enjoyed traveling. He was a member of Trinity Christian Reformed Church where he served as an elder. He was a member of the BVA, DAV, VFW and American Legion.
Wilbert is survived by his wife of 59+ years, Betty; three daughters: Debra (Doug) Boerman of Byron Center, MI; Nancy (Gilmar) Van Beek of Sioux Falls, SD; Judy (Anthony) Hansum of Platte, SD; nine grandchildren: Diane Boerman, David (Melissa) Boerman, Rebecca (Keith) Coacher, Jason Van Beek, Ashley, Lydia, Hannah, Sonya, and Tony Hansum; two great-grandchildren; three brothers: Melvin (Ruth) Vanden Bos, Leroy (Susan) Vanden Bos, and Delmar (Ruth) Vanden Bos; three sisters: Elaine Wynia, Edith (Ed) Gray, and Delores (Marv) Van Genderen; and brother-in-law, David (Elaine) Wiebenga.
Wilbert was preceded in death by his parents, John and Lena; daughter, Donna; and sister, Marlene Wiebenga.
