IRETON, IOWA – Wanda Marie Schmidt, 96, of Sioux Center, Iowa, formerly of Ireton, passed away on Tuesday, November 1, 2022, at Crown Pointe Estates Care Center in Sioux Center.
Funeral Service will be 11:00 a.m. Monday, November 7, 2022, at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Ireton, Iowa with Rev. Michael Boothby officiating. Burial will follow at Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Ireton. Visitation with the family present will be from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. Monday prior to the funeral.
The Porter Funeral Home in Ireton is assisting the family. The Schmidt family prefers memorials be given to St. Paul’s Lutheran Church.
Wanda Marie Schmidt was born December 25, 1925, in Ireton, Iowa, the daughter of Delbert and Velma (Brown) Day. She went to country school and graduated from Ireton High School in 1943. Wanda attended Nettleton Business College and worked for a loan company. She married Marvin Schmidt on December 30, 1944, in Brooklyn, New York at Sheepshead Bay in the Maritime Chapel. They were married by Chaplain Harpole as Marvin was serving in the Merchant Marines. While in New York, Wanda worked for a home loan company.
Following the war, Marv and Wanda returned home to a farm north of Ireton, where they raised their family. In 1966 they moved to Ireton. Wanda worked part-time at the Smart Shop in Hawarden from 1969 to 1987. After Marv retired, they traveled all over the United States visiting several presidential homes and family, returning to New York in 1989.
Wanda joined the St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in 1952 where she was a member of the Women’s League.
She is survived by her children, Steve (Pam) Schmidt of Sioux City, Iowa, Julie (Shaun) Schneider of Akron, Iowa, and Scott (Maralee) Schmidt of Austin, Texas; daughter-in-law, Linda Schmidt of Tampa, Florida; 10 grandchildren, John Schmidt, Kelly (Amy) Schmidt, and Amanda (Brandon) Verros, Jason (Heather) Schneider, Aaron (Amy) Schneider, and Erika (Dave Weinmann, Alexandra (Jeff) Florence, Megan (Justin) Blumentrath, Luke Schmidt, and Logan Schmidt; 18 great-grandchildren, Christian, Noah, Nathan, Parker, Camden, Cael, Larissia, Aaden, Axton, Beckett, Brinley, Quinn, David, Brenden, Cooper, Brecken, Oliver, and Lucy.
Wanda was preceded in death by her parents; her in-laws, George and Louise Schmidt; aunt, Grace Brown; husband, Marv on September 25, 2011; son, Dan; grandsons, Micah Schneider and David Schmidt; great-grandson, Carson Schneider; brother, Buss Day; and 2 sisters, Ardis Day and Carol Wangen and her husband Bill.
