Walter Huebner

Hawarden, Iowa: Walter C. 'Pete' Huebner, age 96, of Hawarden, Iowa died Monday, November 4, 2013 at the Hillcrest Health Care Center. A funeral service will be at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, November 9, 2013 at the Hawarden American Lutheran Church in Hawarden, Iowa with Rev. Erma Wolf officiating. Burial will follow at the Grace Hill Cemetery. Visitation will begin at noon on Friday, November 8, 2013 until 4 p.m. at Porter Funeral Home and then resuming at the American Lutheran Church at 5 p.m. with a prayer service at 7:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, please direct memorials to his church, HALC, at 1417 12th Street, Hawarden, IA 51023 or Ingham Okoboji Lutheran Bible Camps (IOLBC), 1203 Inwan Street, Milford, IA 51351. Walter 'Pete' Huebner was born September 20, 1917 in rural Union County, South Dakota to Wilhelm F. and Delinda (Thom) Huebner. Pete attended school through the 8th grade at Mount Hope School in Union County, South Dakota. He was baptized and confirmed at Union Creek Lutheran Church. Pete married Johanna Bultman December 6, 1938 in rural Akron, Iowa. Pete began farming in Sioux County, Iowa with a team of horses in 1939. He farmed all his life in Sioux County until he retired in 1992. While farming, Pete also worked at Cudahy's packing plant and later at Armour packing plant, both in Sioux City. He also drove a truck for Russell Westadt and Lloyd Keehn.

Pete was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church and served as an elder there for many years, was a part of the choir and Men's Club. Later he joined the Hawarden American Lutheran Church where he served on the church council. Pete was also active in the community and participated in the Hawarden Saddle Club and the restoration of Calliope Village. He enjoyed traveling, dancing, horses, playing cards, and visiting family and friends. He never met a stranger. Pete was a dedicated husband and Sundays were meant for church and family.

Pete is survived by his children, Dallas (Ardis) Huebner of Hawarden, Iowa, Delores (Thomas) Bertram of Sioux City, Iowa and Deborah (James) Miller of Ankeny, Iowa; sons-in-law, James Farrell of Spirit Lake, Iowa and Dr. Richard Johnson of Alcester, South Dakota; 19 grandchildren; and 32 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Johanna; daughters, Delphine Farrell, Dawn Adams, and Dixie Johnson; son-in-law, Richard Adams; infant granddaughter, Jill Adams; infant great-grandson, Blake Armstrong; and siblings, Albert, Arthur, Gertrude (John) Papritz, John, August, Willie, Ralph, and Rueben.
