Rock Valley, IA: Walter Groeneweg, 87, of Rock Valley, died Saturday, January 3, 2015 at Hegg Memorial Health Center. Funeral service will be 10:00 am Wednesday, January 7, 2015 at United Reformed Church in Rock Valley. Rev. Joel Vander Kooi will be officiating. Burial will follow at Valley View Cemetery. Visitation with family will be 5-7 pm Tuesday at United Reformed Church. Condolences for the family may be left online at www.porterfuneralhomes.com. Walter was born November 9, 1927 at Sioux Center, IA, son of Bastian and Lydia (Vanden Bosch) Groeneweg. Walt served 2 years in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict. He married Alta Mae Kats on October 14, 1953 at Rock Valley and together they farmed north of Rock Valley where Walt also sold feed and fertilizer. He had served on the Hope Haven board 9 years, the board of Christian Education Chapter, was a deacon at Calvin CRC and volunteered at Hope Haven many years. He enjoyed sharing stories and visiting with people.
Surviving relatives include his wife, Alta Mae; son, Dennis Dean (Joan) Groeneweg and their children, Rose, Miranda, Nathan of Rock Valley, son, Leon Robert Bob (Cherie) Groeneweg and their children, Morgen, Kelcie, Erin of Rock Valley, daughter, Laura Beth (Greg) Getting and their children, Cody and Carter of Sheldon, IA, daughter, Gail Ranae (Henry) Blankespoor and their children, Dexter, Brett, and Levi of Doon; brothers, John B. (Marion) Groeneweg of Hull, IA, Simon (Judy) Groeneweg of Rock Valley, Albert (Joanne) Groeneweg of Rock Valley; sister Pat (John) Bauman of Rock Valley; and 16 great-grandchildren.
Walter was preceded in death by his parents; grandson, Brock Kleinwolterink; brothers, Paul and Leonard (Catherine) Groeneweg; and sisters, Anna (Henry) Van Ginkel, Rena (Dick) De Vries, Lydia (Clarence) Terpstra.
