Virginia McCarthy Sederstrom

Hawarden, Iowa ~ Virginia (Burian) McCarthy Sederstrom, 85, of Hawarden, passed away on Tuesday, August 4, 2015 at the Hillcrest Health Care Services in Hawarden.
Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Hawarden, Iowa with Rev. William A. McCarthy, Rev. Doug Klein, Msgr. Ed Burian, and other area priests concelebrating. Burial will follow in the Grace Hill Cemetery. Visitation will be from noon to 3:00 p.m. Thursday at Porter Funeral Home in Hawarden. Visitation will continue at St. Mary’s Catholic Church with a Rosary at 5:00 p.m. followed by visitation with the family until 7:00 p.m. and a Vigil Service beginning at 7:00 p.m. Condolences may be sent to www.porterfuneralhomes.com.
Virginia was born on July 14, 1930 in Mitchell, South Dakota the oldest of 4 children to Adolph and Della (Brady) Burian. Virginia graduated from Kimball High School and attended South Dakota State University and Nettleton College in Sioux Falls. After graduation she moved to Sioux City to work as a secretary for Cloverleaf Storage. While there she met William H. McCarthy, they were married on November 19, 1955. Living near Hawarden, Iowa she spent much of her life as a homemaker, raising her three children and helping others. Virginia loved music and was a highly skilled musician following her father Adolph whom led a dance orchestra in central South Dakota. Virginia was offered an invitation to join the Les Brown Orchestra to play alto saxophone. Virginia taught music at St. Mary’s Grade School in Hawarden and throughout the years played the piano at various gatherings and celebrations throughout the area. On May 10, 2003 her husband William H. passed on to the next part of life.
On January 7, 2005 Virginia married Eugene Sederstrom at St. Mary’s Church in Hawarden. The couple lived in Hawarden until his passing on January 18, 2010.
Virginia was a member of the St. Mary’s Guild and the St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Hawarden.
Virginia is survived by her brother, Msgr. Edward Burian of Hawarden; two sisters, Connie and (Jim) Reuland of Sioux Falls and Della and (Larry) Mathis of Baltic South Dakota. Virginia is also survived by three children: Mary and (Brad) Kohler of Minnetonka Minnesota, Rev. William A. McCarthy of Remsen, Iowa and Patricia and (David) Haden of Primghar, Iowa. Grandchildren include Shannon and her husband Christopher Clouse and Patrick Kohler, Michael and Cara Haden of Independence, Iowa, Johnathan Haden of Des Moines, Christine and her husband Ryan Brasser of Larchwood, Iowa, Daniel Haden and Brian Haden of Primghar.
