Hawarden, Iowa ~ Virgil “Virg” McKee, 79, of Hawarden, Iowa passed away on Wednesday August 12, 2015 at his residence in Hawarden.
Funeral Service will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the United Methodist Church in Hawarden with Rev. Barb Joy officiating. Burial will follow in the Grace Hill Cemetery. Visitation will begin at noon Wednesday, with the family present from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. and a Prayer Service at 7:00 p.m. at the Hawarden United Methodist Church. The Porter Funeral Home is assisting the family.
Virgil McKee was born September 18, 1935 in rural Hudson, South Dakota to Ed and Fannie (DeVries) McKee. As a young man he farmed in the rural Hudson area. At the age of 21, he bought a brand new 1956 Ford.
Virgil was united in marriage to Joyce Paulson on October 31, 1961. With this union 2 children were born, Eddie and Diane. Joyce and Virgil parted ways.
Virgil was an owner-operator of a gravel truck from 1966 up until his retirement in 2000. He purchased his current residence in Hawarden in 1973, where he lived until his passing.
He married Maribeth Anderson in May of 1992. They later parted ways.
Virgil was an avid fisherman and loved playing pool. He was a member of the Eagle’s Club and was an active member of the West Sioux Sportsman Club. His sister Telma taught Virgil how to dance, as he was an excellent dancer.
He will be remembered as a generous friend and neighbor, and loved visiting with those who stopped by to chat.
Virgil is survived by his son, Eddie McKee of Gilbert, Arizona; daughter, Diane and her husband Collin Hoops of Ireton, Iowa; grandchildren, Shelby Schmitt and his wife Amanda, and Breanne and her husband Eric Orr; great-grandchildren, Quinten and Alayna Schmitt, London and Isabella Orr, and Kaden Boone; a sister, Telma (Guy) Baker of Canton, South Dakota; a brother, Jim (Kay) McKee of Alcester, South Dakota; 2 nieces, Becky Torkelson and Shelly Larson; 3 nephews, Gary Baker, Clint McKee, and Jimmie McKee; special friend, Nancy Schiefen; and several cousins and many friends.
Virgil was preceded in death by his parents; a niece, Robin McKee; and many aunts, uncles, and cousins.
