Violet Te Slaa

Rock Valley, IA: Violet “Vi” Te Slaa, 84, of Rock Valley, Iowa, died Saturday, December 19, 2020, at Whispering Heights in Rock Valley. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, December 23, at 10:30 AM at Calvin Christian Reformed Church in Rock Valley with Rev. Gideon Wamala officiating. The family will be available to greet friends prior to the funeral service from 9:00-10:00 AM. The service will be livestreamed at http://calvinchristianreformedchurch.yourstreamlive.com/. Burial will be at Valley View Cemetery of Rock Valley. Visitation, with no family present, will be held Tuesday, December 22, from 3:00-7:00 PM at Calvin CRC. Memorials may be given to Justice for All (JFA) or Sioux Center Home Health and Hospice.

 

   Violet Te Slaa, daughter of William and Hilda (Zwaan) Roozenboom, was born February 22, 1936, at Martin, South Dakota. Her family would later move and settled at Brandon, South Dakota where Vi would graduate from high school. Following high school, she worked at a bank in Sioux Falls. Vi would meet the love of her life, Leroy Te Slaa, and the couple was united in marriage at Sioux Falls, South Dakota on May 1, 1958. They spent all their married years living in Rock Valley. For 16 years, Vi and Leroy ran the Valley Park Motel. Vi also worked at various locations in Rock Valley including, Kooima Company, Beverly’s, and Hi-Way Chevrolet. She was known for being the first lady to start a second hand store in Rock Valley.

 

   Vi’s favorite times were spent in the boat fishing with family and friends. She loved to tease Lee that she was the one who taught him to fish. Vi also made many quilts for her children and grandchildren. In her retirement years, she spent many hours volunteering at Justice for All in Rock Valley. Vi was a member of Calvin Christian Reformed Church and a faithful member of the Ladies Aide.

 

   Vi is survived by her husband of 62 years, Lee; 3 children, Cheryl (Warren) Van Ginkel of Doon, Iowa, Kevin (Jan) Te Slaa of Sioux Center, Iowa, and Carla (Gary) De Jager of Rock Valley; 12 grandchildren, Chris Van Ginkel, Kari (Doug) Van Es, Kelly (Becky) Van Ginkel, Cody Van Ginkel, Shalene (Dustin) Hendrickson, Anna (Gregg) Rempe, Linn (Zach) Dicus, Levi (Emilee) Te Slaa, Matt Te Slaa, Brittani (Bryant) Van Kekerix, Blake De Jager, and Dawson De Jager; 15 great-grandchildren; 7 siblings, Grace Boersma of Portland, Oregon, Greta (John) De Wit of Sioux Falls, Leo (Joan) Roozenboom of Portland, Lawrence (Linda) Roozenboom of Brandon, Jerry (Judy) Roozenboom of Sioux Falls, Don (Carol) Roozenboom of Montevideo, Minnesota, and Dee Alexander of Omaha, Nebraska; 2 sisters-in-law, Dora Steffen of Hills, Minnesota and Marlene Te Slaa of Rock Valley; and brother-in-law, Marvin Te Slaa of Grand Rapids.

 

   Vi was preceded in death by her parents, William and Hilda Roozenboom; 2 brothers, Henry and Willard Roozenboom; sister, Pearl Geiken, and an infant brother.
