Shirlee Schemmel

Shirlee Schemmel, 88 of Sarasota, Florida, formerly of Inwood, Iowa, passed away October 7, 2017 at Brookdale Palmer Ranch Assisted Living in Sarasota. Memorial services will be held at 10:00 AM, Tuesday, July 10, 2018 at The Church of St. Mary in Larchwood, Iowa with Father Francis Makwinja officiating. Burial will follow the service at Richland Cemetery in Inwood, Iowa. Condolences may be left for the family at www.porterfuneralhomes.com.

Shirlee (Buchmeyer) Schemmel was born on September 27, 1929 in Davenport, Iowa to Mildred and Carmen Buchmeyer. She graduated from Assumption High School in Davenport. She later moved to Sioux Falls, South Dakota where she met and married Oran (Bill) Schemmel on May 26, 1951. Bill and Shirlee settled in Inwood, Iowa where they owned and operated the Inwood Egg Market. Later the family moved to Madison, South Dakota, Sioux Falls, South Dakota to Bettendorf, Iowa and finally retired in Sarasota, Florida. Nine children were born to Shirlee and Bill: Heidi, Jeff, Jane and Jill (twins born and passed in 1956), Holly, Jerry, Jed, Jason, and Joel.

Shirlee was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother and friend. She was so very proud of her 7 surviving children, 15 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren.

Shirlee spent her adult life in sales, real estate and banking but will be remembered best as a mother who instilled in her children respect, values, and drive.

She is preceded in death by her husband Bill, sister Mary Jo Higgins and her parents Mildred Diehl and Carmen Buchmeyer.
