Hawarden, Iowa ~ Sheila A. Smith, 86, of Hawarden, Iowa died Sunday, August 3, 2014 at the Hillcrest Health Care Services in Hawarden.
Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Hawarden with Father Doug Klein officiating. Burial will follow in the Grace Hill Cemetery. Visitation will begin at noon Tuesday, with the family present from 5:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the Porter Funeral Home in Hawarden. Condolences may be sent to www.porterfuneralhomes.com.
Sheila Ann Smith was born October 15, 1927 in Hawarden, Iowa, the youngest child of Wayne and Anna (Kavanaugh) Hedden. She was three months old when her father tragically drowned while cutting ice on the Big Sioux River for the Hawarden Ice House. She graduated from Hawarden High School in 1947.
Sheila married Bernard Smith on July 10, 1948. To this union, six children were born. Bernie passed away July 13, 2011.
During her early years of marriage, Sheila taught country school. She was a lifelong member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church. Some of her hobbies included: golf, reading, and playing cards. She lived a life devoted to her family and church.
She is survived by five children, Dianna (Dave) Kemper of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, Genise (Greg) Vreeman of Ireton, Iowa, Theresa (Craig) Rodgers of Indianola, Iowa, Donald Smith of Cave Junction, Oregon, and Robert (Bonnie) Smith of Hawarden; eleven grandchildren; fourteen great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
Sheila was preceded in death by her parents; husband; infant daughter, Nancy; a brother, Wayne Hedden; and six sisters, Fern Van Wyhe, Marion Smith, Evelyn Klave, Shirley Lee, Lois De Vries and infant sister, Geraldine.
Memorials may be directed to St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Hawarden.
