Hawarden, Iowa ~ Russell “Rusty” Westcott, 85, of Hawarden, died on Monday, January 23, 2017 at his residence in Hawarden.
Funeral Service will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday, January 28, 2017 at the Associated Church in Hawarden with Rev. Erma Wolf officiating. Burial with Military Rites will follow in the Grace Hill Cemetery in Hawarden. Visitation will begin at noon Friday, with a Prayer Service at 7:00 p.m. at the Porter Funeral Home in Hawarden. Condolences may be sent to www.porterfuneralhomes.com. The family prefers memorials to be given to the Associated Church in Hawarden or Hospice of Siouxland in Sioux City, Iowa.
Russell Lee Westcott was born October 11, 1931 in Boyer, Iowa, the son of Russell and Louise (Nissen) Westcott. He attended elementary school at Craig, Iowa and high school in Le Mars, Iowa. Russell served in the US Navy from April 1952 to April of 1956, serving 2 years aboard the USS Hancock Aircraft Carrier.
He married Dolores Haines on July 26, 1952 at the Associated Church in Hawarden, Iowa. Russell worked for the Chicago Northwestern Railroad before and shortly after his service in the Navy. In 1958 they moved to Kansas where Russell worked for Van Buskirk Construction. They moved to Centerville, Iowa in 1965 where he helped to build the Rathbun Dam. He also had worked for Kevin Kent Construction and retired in 1996. They moved back to Hawarden in 2005.
Russell was a member of the Associated Church in Hawarden, the American Legion Post 254 of Hawarden and the Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie 2675 at Centerville. He was one of the first to volunteer for PET Iowa (personal energy transportation) that were built at the United Methodist Church and distributed worldwide to over 65 countries. Russell enjoyed fishing and hunting, watching baseball (especially the Cubs!), auto mechanics and working in his yard. He liked playing cards with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren and loved going dancing with his sweetheart.
Survivors include his wife, Dolores; children, David Westcott and wife Gina of Parker, Colorado, Lori Logsdon of Centerville, Iowa, Candee Seidita and husband Tony of Shorewood, Wisconsin, and Michelle Cortesio and husband Brian of Pleasant Hill, Iowa; grandchildren, Amber Westcott-Baker, Ashlee Davis, Sara Seidita, and Amanda Seidita; step grandchildren, Megan Stackhouse, Paul Kaelin, and Brendan Cortesio; great-grandchildren, Faye Davis, Elle Davis, and Kira Westcott-Baker; and step-great-grandchildren, William Stackhouse, Lillian Stackhouse, and Mia Cortesio.
Russell was preceded in death by his parents; and a grandchild, Michael Logsdon.
Russell’s family would like to thank the VA for all they’ve done for Russell and his family, and to Dr. Harvey, Hospice of Siouxland, Tim Pies, Denise, Marie, Sheila, Pam, Lindsey, Jane, and all who have helped out, you are all angels.
