Russel Van Berkum

Russel Lloyd Van Berkum, 82, of Rock Valley, Iowa, died Monday, October 9, 2017 at Avera McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. Memorial services will be held Friday, October 13, 2017 at 10:30 AM at First Reformed Church of Rock Valley with Rev. Verlyn Boone officiating. Private family inurnment will be held prior to the service at Valley View Cemetery of Rock Valley. Visitation, with the family present, will be held Thursday, October 12, 2017 at First Reformed Church from 5:30-7:30 PM.

Russel Lloyd Van Berkum, son of Luke and Tilda (Remmerde) Van Berkum, was born June 5, 1935 at Rock Valley, Iowa. He was united in marriage with Joyce Vander Pol on January 26, 1956 in Sheldon, Iowa. Together they lived in Rock Valley, where Russ worked at the Rock Valley Sale Barn, Community Oil, and the Sioux County Road Maintenance Department, operating a road grader and other heavy equipment for 32 years. After retiring, Russ drove truck for various companies. He enjoyed woodworking, shooting pool, and playing pinochle. Russ loved life and his family.

Russ is survived by his wife of 61 years, Joyce; five children, Gail (Darla) Van Berkum of Doon, Iowa, Cheri Leusink of Rock Valley, Tammy (Clyde) Hoekstra of Ocheyedan, Iowa, LaDonna (Gary) Dodd of Cleghorn, Iowa, and Vonda Van Berkum of Rock Valley; 10 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; mother, Tilda Van Berkum of Rock Valley; two brothers, Cliff (Phyllis) Van Berkum of Swea City, Iowa and David (Marly) Van Berkum of Sioux City, Iowa; and sister, Lois Rensink of Hospers, Iowa.

He was preceded in death by his father, Luke Van Berkum; son-in-law, Dennis Leusink; brother and sister-in-law, Harold and Marge Van Berkum; and brother-in-law, Glen Rensink.
