Hawarden, Iowa ~ Robert H. Hodoway, of Hawarden, Iowa died on Monday, August 29, 2016 at the Hillcrest Healthcare Center in Hawarden at the age of 96 years.
Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday, September 1, 2016 at the St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Hawarden with Father Doug Klein officiating. Burial with military rites will follow in the Grace Hill Cemetery. A Vigil Service will be at 7:00 p.m. Wednesday at the St. Mary’s Catholic Church. Robert H. Hodoway was born May 17, 1920 in Hawarden, Iowa. He enlisted in the US Navy and served from 1942-1945. While in the Navy he met Mary Anne “Marian” Dier and were married on March 6, 1943 in Chicago, Illinois.
They moved to Hawarden after Bob was honorably discharged from the US Navy and started farming with his father.
He loved farming, milked cows for several years, and grew pumpkins, squash, and watermelon, which he loved giving away to friends and family. Bob also enjoyed playing cards.
He was active in St. Mary’s Catholic Church, a continued member of the American Legion for 72 years, past commander of the American Legion Two Oaks Post 254, and he served on honor guard for military funerals. Bob was honored in the 2012 Labor Day parade, for the 125th celebration, as the oldest man born and still living in Hawarden.
Bob is survived by his daughters, Kathy and Ron Madsen of Volin, South Dakota and Patricia Wegner of Gilbert, Arizona; 5 grandchildren; 9 great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews; and special friend, Russ Ruhland.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Marian of 67 years; his parents, Harry and Margaret (Theis) Hodoway; an infant brother, Paul; and two sisters, Madelyn Corrie and Helene Maurer.
