Rock Valley, IA: Richard Verburg, 96, of Rock Valley, died Wednesday, June 5, 2013 at Whispering Heights. A funeral service will be 10:30 a.m. Monday, June 10, 2013 at the First Reformed Church in Rock Valley with Rev. Garry Nyenhuis officiating. Burial will follow at Valley View Cemetery. Visitation with the family will be 2-4 pm Sunday, June 9, 2013 at Porter Funeral Home in Rock Valley. Memorials may be given to Hope Haven International Wheelchair Ministry. Richard was born April 16, 1917 at Rock Valley, son of Klaas and Henrietta (Beek) Verburg. He married Marian Vink on February 11, 1943 at Hull, Iowa. Together they farmed northwest of Rock Valley until moving to Rock Valley in June 1983. Richard was an avid fisherman, hunter, and trapper, as he loved the outdoors. He also dedicated a lot of his time to Hope Haven International Wheelchair Ministry, church and Justice for All mission work, and was a member of Hope Haven Heritage Society. Richard moved to Whispering Heights on September 15, 2010.
Surviving relatives include his wife, Marian; sons, Ken (Mary Lou) Verburg, Arlan (Alma) Verburg all of Rock Valley; daughter, Rhonda (Ken) Gould of Sheridan, WY; 6 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; sisters-in-law, Gertrude Verburg of Mankato, MN, Ann Verburg of Sheldon, IA.
Richard was preceded in death by siblings, Nellie Van Wyhe, William Verburg, Henry Verburg, and Marie Vink.
