HAWARDEN, IOWA ~ Raymond Edward Van Wyhe, 93, of Hawarden, passed away on Monday, January 15, 2024, at the Hawarden Regional Healthcare Hospital.
Funeral Service will be 11:00 a.m. Friday, January 19, 2024, at Trinity Lutheran Church, LCMS in Hawarden with Rev. Joshua Lowe officiating. A lunch will follow and then burial with Military Rites at Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Ireton, Iowa. Visitation with the family will be from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. prior to the funeral. The Porter Funeral Home in Hawarden is assisting the family. The funeral service will be livestreamed on the Trinity Lutheran Church Facebook page. Raymond’s family prefers memorials be directed to the Trinity Lutheran Church, LCMS.
Raymond Edward Van Wyhe was born January 4, 1931, to John and Sophie (Klave) Van Wyhe on a farm west of Ireton, Iowa.
Ray attended country school thru the 8th grade. He proudly served his country as a member of the United States Navy. He was united in marriage to Dorothy Miedema on February 12, 1960. Together they had 2 sons, Kevin and David. Ray was a farmer at heart and lived on the Van Wyhe Homestead west of Ireton. They retired to Hawarden, Iowa in May of 2008. Ray moved to Hillcrest Health Care Services on March 9, 2015.
Ray was a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church, LCMS and the Bertram American Legion 276 of Ireton. Ray was a humble man who told lots of stories of the older days. He will be missed.
Ray is survived by his son, Kevin (Fran) Van Wyhe of Hawarden; daughter-in-law, Judy Van Wyhe of Sioux City, Iowa; grandchildren, Alycia (Trent) Kielty of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, Tyler (Alyssa) Van Wyhe of Hawarden, and Ryan Van Wyhe of Sioux City; great-grandchildren, Olivia, Lincoln, Jack, and Ronan Kielty, and Addilyn, Emmalee, and Clara Van Wyhe; and 2 sisters-in-law, Frieda Kortlever of Orange City, Iowa and Hilda Kratochvil of Tucson, Arizona.
Ray was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Dorothy of 62 years on May 1, 2022; son, David on August 12, 2021; 4 brothers, Lawrence (Sophie), Johnnie (Fern), Elmer (Stella), and Robert (Rose Mary); 3 sisters, Hazel (Russ) Popma, Viola (Howard) Liston, and Leona (Hank) Koopmans; and 5 brothers-in-law, Pete Kortlever, John, Clarence, and Chuck Miedema, and Daryl Kratochvil.
