Hudson, South Dakota ~ Raymond Duane “Ray” Hazel, 76, of rural Hudson, South Dakota, passed away peacefully from complications of Parkinson’s Disease early in the morning of June 28th, at the Hudson Care and Rehab Center, where he had been residing since December of 2014.
Funeral Service will be 10:30 a.m. Friday, July 1, 2016 at Trinity Lutheran Church LCMS in Hawarden, Iowa with Rev. David Daumer officiating. Burial will follow in the Grace Hill Cemetery. A Prayer Service will be 7:00 p.m. Thursday, with visitation with the family to follow until 8:30 p.m. at the Trinity Lutheran Church. The Porter Funeral Home in Hawarden is assisting the family. Raymond Duane "Ray" Hazel was born July 22, 1939 at the Hudson Hospital, Hudson, South Dakota. He was the son of William and Annie (Herman) Hazel. Ray attended East View country school and then Hudson High School. He farmed with his dad after graduation.
In 1961 he was united in marriage to Marcia Hass at Trinity Lutheran Church, Hawarden Iowa. They farmed in Iowa until 1967 then they moved back to Hudson S.D. area and farmed until his health declined.
Ray was involved in many organizations throughout the years. He was a board member of the Lincoln County Pork Producers and Eden Township for many years. He also served on the Stewardship Committee at Trinity Lutheran Church and a past member of the Lincoln County Cattleman's Association.
Ray’s favorite part of farming was feeding cattle, and was awarded the "Pioneer Livestock Shipper Award" in 1994. His favorite past-time was going places with his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren, such as sales barns, threshing bees, county fairs, and tractor shows; they were the joy of his and Marcia's life. He also enjoyed long road vacations trips with his family.
He is survived by his wife Marcia; three sons, Russell (Anita), Mark all from Hudson and Doug (special friend Heidi) of Phoenix Arizona.; four granddaughters, Jessica (Kyle) Paulson of Hudson, South Dakota, Cassandra (Zack) DeBruin of Alcester, South Dakota, Angela Hazel (special friend John) of Kansas City, Kansas, and Kaitlyn Hazel of Sioux Falls, South Dakota; and one grandson, Andrew Hazel from Sioux Falls, South Dakota; four great grandchildren and one on the way, Aleigha, Charleanna and Conrad Paulson, Haizen and "Tootles" De Bruin; two sisters, Clara Larson from Lakeville, Minnesota and Jennie West of Sioux Falls, South Dakota; sister-in-law, Lois (John) Hazel of Baltic, South Dakota; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Ray was preceded in death by his parents William and Annie, sister Nellie and her husband Sam, brother Bill and his wife Marilyn, brother Louie and his wife Garnett, brother John, and sister Wilma and her husband Harold, and nephews Vince, Paul and Jim.
