Phyllis LeAnn (Johnson) Heuer, 97, of Hawarden went to be with her Lord and Savior Thursday, October 10, 2024 at the Hillcrest Health Care Services. All services will be in Hawarden. Visitation with the family will begin at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, October 16 with a Prayer Service at 7:00 p.m. followed by visitation with the family until 8:00 p.m. at the Porter Funeral Home. Funeral Service will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday, October 17 at Trinity Lutheran Church, LCMS with the Pastor Joshua Lowe officiating. Burial will be in Grace Hill Cemetery. Phyllis (Johnson) Heuer was born February 1, 1927, to Fred and Elizabeth (Moeller) Johnson in Plato Township near Rock Valley. She was baptized March 6, 1927, at Peace Lutheran Church in rural Sioux Center. She was later confirmed on May 25, 1941, at St. Paul’s Lutheran church in Ireton. She attended Center #9 country school through eighth grade and graduated from Ireton High School May of 1945.
She was united in marriage to Clarence Melvin William Heuer on Valentine's Day, February 14th, 1946, at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Ireton. After settling in at the Heuer home place, they attended Peace Lutheran Church for many years. Clarence and Phyllis were blessed with two children, a daughter, Shari, and a son, Randy. In December of 1977, the couple moved to their new home in Hawarden and became members of Trinity Lutheran Church.
Phyllis’ interests included being active in the development of Calliope Village where she maintained the Bank Building for many years and was also part of the Hawarden Hospital Auxiliary. Phyllis was an active member of her church. She taught Sunday School for 9 years at Peace Lutheran. In addition, at Trinity Lutheran she was involved in Lutheran Women’s Missionary League, Trinity Lutheran Ladies Aid, and the Sewing Circle. She made hundreds of quilts and many banners for the church. She also visited nursing homes and shut-ins as a Lamplighter for over 20 years.
Her hobbies included the craft of Norwegian Hardanger which she learned from a dear friend. She also bowled with the Kent Feed team for many years. At home she maintained her flower beds for which she grew her own flowers for 29 years with the help of her husband and family. She enjoyed traveling with her husband to Japan, Germany, Hawaii and many states throughout the United States. Another interest was attending both her grandchildren and great grandchildren’s many activities.
Those left to cherish her memory are her loving family, a daughter, Shari and her husband Fred Koopmans of Sioux Center; and a son, Randy Heuer and his wife Pam of Alcester. Grandchildren are Michele Dirkx and her husband Brian of Spencer, Michael Koopmans and his wife Tammy of Hinton, Jayson Koopmans and his wife Carolina of Mankato, Tara Shumansky and her husband Todd of Sioux City, Sara DeLay and her husband Ben of Beresford, and Josh Homandberg and his wife Molly of Alcester. Great Grandchildren are Jenna (Dirkx) Ambrose & her husband, Zach & Devin Dirkx, Caden & Kylie Koopmans, Carson & Jackson Koopmans, Jace, Aubrey, & Mason Shumansky, Josie, Megan & Cooper DeLay, Lawson, Maci and Haddi Homandberg and many nephews. Phyllis also has a sister-in-law, Vivian Johnson of Ireton.
Phyllis was preceded in death by her parents, Fred and Elizabeth (Moeller) Johnson; her husband, Clarence Heuer; sister, Lorraine Wells; nephew, Larry Wells; brother, Roland Johnson; brother-in-law, Willis Wells.
Phyllis wished for memorials to be directed to her church, Trinity Lutheran Church, LCMS in Hawarden.
