Peter James Horstman

Doon, IA: Peter James Horstman, age 75, of Doon, Iowa, passed away peacefully at his home on Monday, March 31, 2025, surrounded by his beloved family. A memorial service will be held Saturday, April 5, at 2:30 PM at Faith Reformed Church of Rock Valley with Rev. Peter Kolb officiating. The service will be livestreamed at https://faithrv.com/. Private family interment will be held prior to the service at Hillside Cemetery of Doon. Visitation with the family present will be held Friday, April 4, from 5:00-7:00 PM at First Reformed Church of Doon. 

Memorials may be directed to Doon First Reformed Church or Sioux Center Home Health and Hospice.

Peter James Horstman, son of Gerrit J. and Ruth (Westra) Horstman, was born May 31, 1949, in Hull, Iowa. Pete attended school in Sioux Center, Iowa and was a graduate of Sioux Center High School in 1968. On November 21, 1969, he was united in marriage with Caron Ann Groeneweg in Rock Valley, Iowa.

Pete began his career at Hiway Implement/John Deere in Hull. In 1975 Pete began farming near Doon, Iowa. He enjoyed custom work, raising livestock, and being a mechanic. Pete was happiest in his shop, turning wrenches or any other tool in his hands. He took great pride in overhauling and painting tractors and especially loved restoring his favorite tractors, John Deere. Pete also loved seeing the fruits of his labor planting and harvesting crops.

Other enjoyments in Pete’s life were fishing, traveling, family vacations, and camping. He was a member of Doon First Reformed Church where he served as a deacon and elder. Pete also served 9 years of the Rural Water Board and 9 years on the Memorial Funeral Home Board in Sioux Center.

Pete is survived by his wife of 55 years, Caron; 3 children, Virginia Horstman of Rock Valley, Leah (Tony) Salas of New Braunfels, Texas, and Phillip (Sara) Horstman of Doon; 5 grandchildren, Ainsley, Brinley, Kylee, Abigail, and Payton; step-granddaughter, Sierra; step-great-granddaughter, Melanie; 4 siblings, Russ Horstman of Tea, South Dakota, Jolene (Ken) Vander Ziel of Rock Valley, Linda (Dave) Van Eck of Lincoln, Nebraska, and Lorna (Bruce) Midthun of Sioux Center; 8 siblings-in-law, Cheryl (Herm) Rozeboom of Rock Valley, Audrey (Leroy) Kreykes of Rock Valley, Arletta (Verlyn) De Weerd of Sioux Center, Sharla (Arlin) Hoogendoorn of Rock Valley, Shonna (Randy) Blankespoor of Rock Valley, Arlin (Carla) Groeneweg of Rock Valley, Donna (James) Van Beek of Ireton, and Doris (Duane) Van Der Brink of Rock Rapids, Iowa; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Pete was preceded in death by his parents, Gerrit J. and Ruth Horstman; brother, Calvin Horstman; and parents-in-law, Albert and Joanna Groeneweg
