Rock Valley, IA: Pearl Zomermaand, 103, died Thursday March 27, 2014 at Whispering Heights, Rock Valley. Funeral service will be held at 1:30 pm Monday at First Christian Reformed Church at Rock Valley with Rev. Matthew Haan officiating. Burial will follow at Valley View Cemetery, Rock Valley. Pearl was born December 9, 1910 at Sioux Center, Iowa, daughter of Andrew and Mary (Mulder) Van Kley. She married Bert Zomermaand on January 4, 1933 at Rock Valley, Iowa. They lived in Rock Valley and Ireton before farming near Lebanon for 10 years and near Hudson, South Dakota for 22 years. Pearl raised chickens, bountiful gardens, and had beautiful flowers. She did many sewing projects, crocheted, loved to be on bowling teams, and volunteered at Whispering Heights and at the Christian School. After Bert died in 1978, Pearl moved to Rock Valley and in 2002 to Whispering Heights. Pearl was a member of Lebanon Christian Reformed Church and its ladies aid group, and later a member of First Christian Reformed Church at Rock Valley and Ladies Bible Study.
Surviving relatives include her children, Mary (Ken) Tilstra of Sheridan, Montana, Elmer (Ranae) Zomermaand of Sioux Center, Iowa, Arnold (Betty) Zomermaand of Inwood, Iowa, Nelma (Steve) Mannes of Littleton, Colorado; 14 grandchildren; 34 great-grandchildren; 3 great-great-grandchild; sister, Joyce Van Otterloo of Hull, Iowa; sister-in-law, Kathryn Van Kley of Rock Valley.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Bert; brothers, Fred and Gary Van Kley; sisters, Caroline Elgersma and Martha Veltkamp.
