Hawarden, Iowa- Paul W. Lockhorst, 69, of Hawarden, died Sunday, February 23, 2014, at the Hawarden Regional Healthcare Hospital.
Funeral service will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the American Lutheran Church in Hawarden with Rev. Erma Wolf officiating. Burial will follow in the Grace Hill Cemetery with Military Honors by the Two Oaks American Legion Post 254 of Hawarden. Visitation will begin at noon Monday, with a Prayer Service at 7:00 p.m. followed by visitation with the family until 8 p.m. at the Porter Funeral Home in Hawarden. Paul W. Lockhorst was born October 3, 1944 in Maurice, Iowa, the son of Peter and Christina (Weyers) Lockhorst. He graduated from West Sioux High School in 1962, continued his education at Briar Cliff University, and graduated from Sioux Empire College with a business degree. He served in the US Army from 1965-1971. After being in the military he hauled livestock in the Ireton area. Paul married Geri Utesch on August 11, 1978 at the Oak Grove State Park. Together they made their home in Hawarden. He worked as a welder and then with Agri-Steel. Paul worked at Coilcraft for 18 years until his retirement. Geri died suddenly on December 27, 1998.
Paul enjoyed making woodworking projects for all the grandkids. He liked painting, fishing, bowling, square dancing, and spending time with his grandkids. Paul enjoyed his Thursday night poker playing with the guys and going to the casino on Saturday mornings on his way to Sioux Falls to take his girls to lunch. He was a regular at Central Caf' and had 'his booth'.
Survivors include his children, Mary (McKee) Green and Perry of Denton, Texas, Tom McKee and Jacki of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, Bill McKee and Gina of Tulsa, Oklahoma, Wendy Steuck of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, and Jennifer Van Roekel and Chris of Marion, South Dakota; 20 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; brother, Don Lockhorst and Deanna of Ireton, Iowa; four sisters, Jeanette Boogerd of Hull, Iowa, Dorothy Hulshof and Melvin of Ireton, Iowa, Christina Cleveringa and Garold of Sioux Center, Iowa and Grace Oldenkamp and Herman of Orange City, Iowa; sister-in-law, Priscilla Lockhorst of Ireton, Iowa; brother-in-law, Darold Bultman of Yankton, South Dakota; and many nephews and nieces.
Paul was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Geri; brother, Peter Lockhorst; sister, Adrianna 'Ada' Bultman; brothers-in-law, Fred Boogerd and Leslie Webert; niece, Charlotte Lockhorst; nephew, Mike Zoeller; and grandson, Keth Toben.
