Rock Valley, IA: Mildred “Millie” Hyronemus, 90, of Rock Valley, Iowa, died Sunday, May 21, 2023, at Good Samaritan Society, Canton, South Dakota. Funeral service will be at 2:00 PM, Thursday, May 25, at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church of Rock Valley with Pastor Edward Pease officiating. Burial will follow at Valley View Cemetery of Rock Valley. Visitation, with the family present, will be from 5:30-7:00 PM on Wednesday, May 24, at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church.
Memorials are suggested to the family for later designation. Porter Funeral Home of Rock Valley is assisting the family with arrangements.
Mildred Evelyn was born to John P. and Selma (Henning) Johnson on November 25, 1932, in Canton, SD. She grew up in Canton and attended school in Canton until the fifth grade when they moved to a farm outside of Canton. She then switched to country school and graduated eighth grade. After school, Millie worked at a restaurant in Canton, and later did cooking and cleaning for several different families.
Millie met Millard Hyronemus at the roller rink. They were married on September 25, 1950, at the Springdale Lutheran Church in Canton. After which the couple lived in Sioux Falls, and on various farms in the Rock Valley area before moving into town. In 1988, Millie started working as a CNA at the Hudson Manor and retired after 19 years.
She enjoyed crocheting and embroidering many sets of dish towels, reading, playing Bingo, and dancing. She also loved hosting and attending family get togethers, or anytime she got to spend with her family.
Millie is survived by sons: Richard (Denise) of Inwood, Iowa, Steve (Carmen) of Alton, Iowa, John of Rock Valley, Iowa, and Robert (Gwen) of Grand Island, Nebraska; daughters: Linda Olsen (Denny Heien) of Hartley, Iowa, Debby (David) Miles of Worthing, South Dakota, Lorri Dykstra of Rock Valley, Iowa, Shelly Smit of Rock Valley, Iowa, and Sandi (Art) Vander Waal of Everson, Washington; daughter-in-law, Gloria Hyronemus of Sioux City, Iowa; 18 grandchildren; 15 step grandchildren; 42 great grandchildren; and many nephews and nieces.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband: Millard in 2017; son: Allen; grandsons: Quentin Hyronemus, Cody Hyronemus and Chad Hyronemus; and sister, Evelyn (Paul) Brown.
