ROCK VALLEY, IOWA ~ Mavis Shirley Vugteveen of Sioux City, Iowa, formerly of Rock Valley, Iowa, passed away on Friday, January 20, 2017 at the Mercy Medical Center in Sioux City, Iowa.
Funeral Service will be 2:00 p.m. Monday, January 23, 2017 at the Porter Funeral Home in Rock Valley, Iowa with Pastor B.J. Van Kalsbeek of the Sunnybrook Community Church officiating. Burial will follow in the Valley View Cemetery. Visitation with the family will be one hour prior to the service. Condolences may be sent to www.porterfuneralhomes.com. Mavis Shirley Moore was born on the Moore homestead near Doon, Iowa, daughter of Clifton and Elsie (Hamann) Moore. She received her education in rural schools in Lyon and Sioux County. She graduated from the Rock Valley High School in 1945. Mavis married Walter J. Vugteveen on September 18, 1946. They lived in Rock Valley.
Mavis was employed as a Bookkeeper for the Thornburg Company, an Orpheum Theatre Cashier for 14 years, employed at the Rock Valley Sales Co., and then employed as a Legal Secretary at the McGill, McGill, & Scott Law Firm in Rock Valley for 32 years.
Mavis was an active member of the Pioneer United Methodist Church for over 60 years and served in many capacities. She was Chairperson of the decorating the church for Christmas and Thanksgiving for many years and sang in the choir for over 40 years.
Mavis enjoyed interior decorating, her flower gardens, and entertaining, but most of all enjoyed spending time with her family.
She is survived by her daughter, Linda Mulder and a son, Larry Vugteveen, both of Sioux City, Iowa; three grandchildren, Melissa (Ron) Nutt of Sioux City, Kelina (Jason) Moore of Omaha, Nebraska, and Lance Vugteveen of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; four great-grandchildren, Joshua and Kaleb Nutt of Sioux City and Tori and Trey Moore of Omaha; two sisters, Marcia (Oscar) Benson of Sheldon, Iowa and Karen Easton of Marshall, Texas; one brother, Jim (Jane) Moore of Lakewood, Colorado; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Walt Vugteveen; her father, Clifton Moore and mother, Elsie (Hamann) Moore of Rock Valley; her sister, Lois Collenbaugh and brother-in-law, John Collenbaugh of Rock Valley; and a brother-in-law, Gary Easton of Marshall, Texas.
