Maurine De Jager

March 16, 1927 — February 14, 2015

Maurine I. DeJager, 87, was called home by our Lord and Savior on Saturday, February 14, 2015. She passed away peacefully under wonderful care at Hillcrest Health Care Center in Hawarden, Iowa.
Funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, February 19, 2015 at the Hawarden Community Church with Rev. Derek Vande Slunt officiating. Interment will follow at Grace Hill Cemetery. Visitation will begin at noon Wednesday, with the family present from 5:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the Porter Funeral Home in Hawarden. Online condolences may be sent to www.porterfuneralhomes.com. The family prefers memorials to be directed to the Hawarden Community Church in lieu of flowers.
Maurine was born March 16, 1927 in Akron Iowa. She was the second of five children born to Goldie (Goodrich) and Hayes Barr. She attended school and grew to adulthood in Akron.
One Saturday night her father talked her into attending a dance with him where she met Elmer DeJager. After a short courtship they were married on September 17, 1947. For the next 33 years she worked beside him on their farm north of Akron in Union County South Dakota, raising children, being a homemaker, and trying to master the art of making her mother-in-laws’ Holland cookies. She worked hard, trusted in the Lord, and loved her family.
After retiring from the farm they moved to Hawarden where they became members of Hawarden Community Church. She spent much of her spare time volunteering at Hillcrest Health Care Center while Elmer was playing cards at the Pizza Ranch. They were blessed to have a marriage that lasted 64 ½ years. As Elmer’s health declined, Maurine honored her wedding vow of “in sickness and health” and cared for him to the end. Maurine will always be remembered for her kind heart and giving nature.
Elmer passed away on March 13, 2012, it is only fitting that they were reunited on Valentines Day.
Maurine is survived by her two sons, James (Ginny) of Rapid City, South Dakota and David of Akron, Iowa; and one sister, Francis Newman of Rogers, Arkansas.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; two brothers, Junior H. and Robert E. Barr; and one sister, Betty Jean Parks.
Say not in grief “she is no more” but live in thankfulness that she was.
