Hawarden, Iowa ~ Mary Jane Wagers, 92, of Hawarden, died Wednesday, October 22, 2014 at the Hillcrest Health Care Services.
Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m. Monday, October 27, 2014 at the St. Marys Catholic Church in Hawarden with Father Doug Klein officiating. Burial will follow in the Grace Hill Cemetery. Visitation with the family will begin at 5:30 p.m.Sunday with a Prayer Service at 7:00 p.m. at the St. Marys Catholic Church. The Porter Funeral Home in Hawarden is assisting the family. Mary Jane Wagers was born February 21, 1922 in DeSmet, South Dakota, the daughter of Howard and Opal (Lewis) Liggett. She graduated from the DeSmet High School in 1940. After graduation she moved to Sioux City, Iowa and worked, and there she met Cyril Curley Wagers. They were married August 3, 1945, after he returned from the service.
In 1946 they moved to Hawarden, Iowa where he managed the Sieg's Auto Parts store until he retired in 1982. Mary Jane worked for the City of Hawarden for 22 years, retiring in 1987.
Curley passed away on December 6, 1997.
Mary Jane was a member of the St. Marys Catholic Church and St. Marys Guild. She served on several local boards and organizations, and especially enjoyed her volunteer time with the Hawarden Hospital Auxiliary. Mary Jane served on the election board for 15 years. She enjoyed her flowers and gardening and especially enjoyed time spent with her great-grandchildren and family. She was a longtime Chicago Cubs fan and attended a game at the age of 90.
She is survived by two sons, and their wives, Steve and Wauneva Peanut Wagers of rural Hawarden, Iowa and Bob and Lori Wagers of Waubey, South Dakota; 5 grandchildren, Dawn and husband Richard Swope, Heather and husband Shawn Kaskie, Joshua and wife Liz Wagers, Jesse and wife Shana Wagers; and Jamie Wagers; 11 great-grandchildren, Alicia Rus, Jonathan Rus, Colton Kaskie, Dereck Kaskie, Abigail Kaskie, Sydney Swope, Hannah Swope, Keira Wagers, Cooper Wagers, Rylee Wagers, and Raezell Wagers; also very special nephew and wife, and family, Charles and Mary Lou Evans of Broomfield, Colorado; and very special other family Denny and Patty Anderson and family of Hawarden, Iowa.
Mary Jane was preceded in death by her parents; step father, Edward E. May; husband, Curley; sister, Elizabeth Coughlin; and infant great-grandson, Jesse Jr. Wagers.
