HAWARDEN, IOWA - Mary J. Jensen, 76, of Hawarden, died Saturday, April 12, 2014 at the Hawarden Regional Healthcare Hospital.
Memorial Service will be 10:00 a.m. Saturday, April 19, 2014 at the American Lutheran Church in Hawarden with Rev. Erma Wolf and Rev. Robert Hansen officiating. The Porter Funeral Home in Hawarden is assisting the family.
Mary Jensen was born March 13, 1938 in Hudson, South Dakota, the daughter of Albert and Adeline (Schuldt) Miller. She graduated from Hudson High School in 1955 and from the Lutheran School of Nursing in Sioux City in 1958 earning her RN Diploma. Mary married Jerry D. Jensen December 26, 1959 at the Hudson Lutheran Church. They have resided in Hawarden, Iowa since 1962. Mary was employed for 4 years at the Veterans Hospital. She continued her nursing career as the school nurse at West Sioux Community Schools for 22 years. She also worked part-time at the Hawarden Hospital and the Hawarden Medical Clinic.
Mary was a member of the American Lutheran Church where she served on the church council for several years and was a member of the WELCA. She was an active member of the Hawarden Chamber of Commerce and Chamber Board. Mary loved playing cards which she did in two bridge clubs. She was a part of the Friendly Neighbors Club and the Xi Delta Mu Chapter of Beta Sigma Phi Sorority. Mary enjoyed doing counted cross stitching art works and loved to bake and cook. Family was everything to Mary, as her granddaughters and god daughters were a very big part of her life. Teaching them to make her Christmas bread was very special to her. Also, everyone now who went to West Sioux always would say Mary was their school nurse. Mary loved working with the kids.
Mary is survived by her husband Jerry; three sons, Joe and wife Cindy of Tempe, Arizona, Bill and wife Donna of Paullina, Iowa, and Jim of Black Hawk, South Dakota; three granddaughters, Elizabeth, Kristin, and Chloe; three siblings, Roger Miller of Donna, Texas, Doris Magee of Johnston, Colorado, and Jo Van Maanen and husband William of Rock Valley, Iowa; and nephews and nieces.
Mary was preceded in death by her parents; sister, Hilda; and brothers, Harvey and Howard.
