Alcester, South Dakota: Mary Horst, 86, of Alcester, South Dakota, formerly of Hudson, South Dakota, died Tuesday, May 20, 2014 at Sanford Health in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. Funeral service will be held Friday, May 23, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. at Alcester United Church of Christ with Rev. Penny Nance officiating. Burial will be at Eden Cemetery of Hudson. Visitation will be held Thursday, May 22, 2014 at the church from 12:00 - 8:00 p.m. with the family present to greet friends from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. Condolences may be left for the family at www.porterfuneralhomes.com.

Mary Jeanette Horst was born February 29, 1928 at Fairview, South Dakota to parents George and Pearl (Martinson) Paulson. She grew up on a farm near Hudson, South Dakota and graduated from Hudson High School in 1946. Growing up Mary attended Hudson Lutheran Church. She married Harold Horst on April 16, 1949. They lived on a farm near Hudson until Harold's death in 1974.

Mary attended Sioux Falls College where she received her Bachelor of Science Degree. She taught in several rural schools, Hudson Public School and in the Alcester-Hudson School District until she retired in 1989.

Her family was her greatest love in life as she enjoyed the time they spent together. Mary loved teaching, shopping, being with dear friends, time on her computer, and cheering on the Minnesota Vikings. Mary was a member of the Alcester United Church of Christ.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, daughter-in-law, Marcia Horst, sisters, Lois Roti and Grace Cole.

Survivors include two children: Ginger (Lonny) Larsen, Cedar Rapids, Iowa; Merle Horst, Brandon, South Dakota; two grandchildren, Jennifer (Jason) Meier, Cedar Rapids, Iowa and Jill (Ryan) Scheckel, Palo, Iowa; six great-grandchildren, Sophia, Reid, Emma, Myles, Ryker, and Cyrus; brother, Spencer (Bonnie) Paulson, Sioux Falls, South Dakota; sister, Joan Smith, Scottsbluff, Nebraska; and many nieces and nephews dear to her heart.
