Marinus Maassen

Rock Valley, IA: Marinus Maassen, 85, of Rock Valley died Friday, March 11, 2016 at the Hegg Memorial Health Center in Rock Valley. Funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, March 16, 2016 at First Christian Reformed Church with Rev. Matthew Haan officiating. Burial will follow at Valley View Cemetery. Marinus was born December 28, 1930 east of Fairview, Iowa, the son of Henry and Jeanette (Faber) Maassen. Marinus married Jennie Kooiman on December 6, 1950 in Rock Valley. Together they made their home in Rock Valley where Marinus owned a feed grinder business. He later worked at Farmers Elevator for over 20 years as a feed truck driver. Marinus enjoyed his flower and vegetable gardens, wood carving, and landscaping. Marinus was known for his gruff exterior but soft interior. His love for his family was evident in the daily games of Wahoo with Jennie and joking around and teasing his grandchildren.

Marinus is survived by his wife of 65 years, Jennie; 8 children, Dwayne “Butch” (Karen) Maassen of Alton, Iowa, Mike (Liane) Maassen, Larry (Pam) Maassen, Brent (Carisa) Maassen all of Rock Valley, Douglas (Donna) Maassen of Albers, Illinois, Bradley Maassen (Mike Clark) of Cardiff, California, Sandi (Steve) Anderson and Leanne Koehler (fiancé, Doug Bliek) all of Rock Valley; 17 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and sisters, Alice Oostra and Cora (Minard) Van Den Top.

He was preceded in death by his parents; son-in-law, Peter Koehler; brother, John (Pat) Maassen; sister, Rika (Albert) Van Den Top; brother-in-law, Marinus Oostra.
