Marian Caroline Reed

HUDSON, SOUTH DAKOTA ~ Marian Reed, 98, of Alcester, South Dakota, formerly of Hudson and Sioux Falls, passed away on Wednesday, September 28, 2022, at Alcester Care and Rehab Center.

   Visitation with the family will begin at 1:00 p.m. and the funeral service will be 2:00 p.m. Sunday, October 2, 2022, at Porter Funeral Home in Hudson, South Dakota with Rev. Kevin Jensen of Hudson Lutheran Church officiating. Burial will follow at Eden Cemetery. 

   Marian Caroline Linder Reed was born August 30, 1924, in Hudson, South Dakota, the eldest of nine children to Carl and Lena (Anderson) Linder, Sr. She was baptized October 1, 1924 and confirmed June 19, 1938. She grew up with her family in Canton, South Dakota and graduated from Hudson High School in 1943.

   Marian married Melvin Reed on July 23, 1949. They made their home in Sioux Falls, South Dakota where Marian worked as a receptionist at KSOO Radio and TV. She was a bookkeeper at Foremost Dairy, later at a bank in Pipestone, Minnesota and then a bookkeeper for the Mitchell Clinic in Mitchell, South Dakota. The last phase of her working career included working in the Medical Records Department at North Central Heart in Sioux Falls.

   Her husband Melvin died in 2004 and in her retirement, Marian enjoyed doing crafts, playing Mahjong and cards, attending estate sales, having coffee parties, and spending time every winter in Arizona.

   Marian was a member of the Abiding Savior Lutheran Church in Sioux Falls for many years where she was involved in WELCA, Christian Women’s Groups, Omega, and Adult Sunday School. She transferred her membership to Hudson Lutheran Church as she made her way back to the Hudson area.

   She is survived by her 2 daughters, Bonita (Don) Rainey of Warsaw, Indiana and Judith (James) Cole of Hudson; 6 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; 12 great-great-grandchildren; brother, Gary Linder of California; brother-in-law, Richard Slack of Harrisburg, South Dakota and sister-in-law, Jane Linder of Sioux Falls.

   Preceding her in death are her parents, Carl and Lena Linder; sisters, Carol Barnhart of California, Barbara Schmid of Sioux City, Iowa, Joyce Slack of Harrisburg, Beverly Sweeney of California, and Audrey Deno of Brandon, South Dakota; and brothers, Robert Linder of Sioux Falls and Carl Linder, Jr. also of Sioux Falls.
