Sioux Falls, SD: Marcella Newborg, 99 years, 7 months, and 16 days, of Sioux Falls, formerly rural Alvord, IA, died Tuesday, January 21, 2014 at Good Samaritan Village in Sioux Falls. A funeral service will be 11:00 am Friday, January 24, 2014 at Peace Lutheran Church, 5509 W. 41st Street, Sioux Falls SD 57106. Burial will follow the luncheon at 2:30 pm at Richland Cemetery of Inwood. Visitation with the family will be 5-6 pm Thursday at Porter Funeral Home at Inwood. Marcella was born June 5, 1914 at Rock Rapids, IA, daughter of F.J. 'Jude' and Emma Johnson Hansen. She attended country school and graduated from Lester, IA High School. She worked at the general store in Lester until her marriage to John Newborg on March 16, 1942. They spent 42 wonderful years together and had one son, Douglas. They farmed on the Newborg homestead near Alvord until moving to Sioux Falls in 1982 to be closer to their son and his family. John died June 3, 1984. Most important to Marcella in her life were her family and her faith. She spent numerous hours with her knitting, making afghan and several hundred baby sweaters for her family and friends all around the country. She had been an active member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church at Inwood and then spent many hours worshipping and volunteering at Peace Lutheran Church at Sioux Falls into the age of 98.
She is lovingly survived by her son Douglas (Darla) Newborg of Sioux Falls, SD; 3 grandchildren, Deanne Newborg of St. Paul, MN, Darren (Jamie) Newborg of Tea, SD, and David Newborg of Sioux Falls, SD; 3 great-grandchildren, Kolby, Keeton, and Kendall of Tea; sister, Nadine Vanden Brink of Rock Rapids, IA; nieces and nephews and many friends.
Marcella was preceded in death by her husband, John; brother, Milton Hansen; sister, Melva Jean Moser.
