Lydia Marie Anderson

HAWARDEN, IOWA – Lydia Marie Anderson, 89, of Hawarden, passed away on Saturday, January 16, 2021 at Oakhill Assisted Living in Hawarden.

   Funeral Service will be 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, January 20, 2021 at Trinity Lutheran Church, LCMS in Hawarden with Rev. Joshua Lowe officiating. Burial will follow at Grace Hill Cemetery with a time of fellowship to follow in the church basement. Masks and social distancing guidelines will be followed. The Porter Funeral Home in Hawarden is assisting the family.

   The family prefers memorials be directed to the Hawarden Senior Center or the Trinity Lutheran Church, LCMS. The funeral will be livestreamed on the Trinity Lutheran Church Facebook page.

   Lydia Marie Anderson was born May 20, 1931 near Emery, South Dakota, the daughter of Ruben and Elfreda (Werning) Buchmann. They lived on farms in the Freeman, South Dakota area before moving to Hawarden, Iowa, where she attended school and was confirmed at the Trinity Lutheran Church.

   Lydia married Peter Anderson on September 24, 1946.They lived and worked for several area farmers before moving to a farm northwest of Chatsworth, Iowa in early 1955, to farm for themselves. They lived and raised their family there for 24 years before moving to Hawarden. Lydia moved to Oakhill Assisted Living in April of 2018.

   Lydia worked at Coilcraft for a few years and later cleaned houses. She was very active with the Hawarden Senior Center, where she delivered meals for several years and was on the Board of Directors. She loved spending time with her friends and playing cards.

   Her family was more important to her than anything else. She was always there when any of them needed her. She liked attending all of the events and activities any of them were in. She liked to crochet, and all her children and grandchildren have afghans that she made.

   She will be remembered and greatly missed by all her family and friends.

   She is survived by her children: Joan Smith of Hawarden, Jim (Kristi) Anderson of Hawarden, Kathy (Wayne) Heuer of Ireton, Iowa and John (Connie) Anderson of Hawarden; 7 grandchildren, Stacey Schipper of Luverne, Minnesota, Ben Van Wyhe of Sioux City, Iowa, Marc (Jenny) Smith of Hinton, Iowa, Mandy (Rodney) Green of Hawarden, Melanie Anderson of Lennox, South Dakota, Abby (Matthew) Bailey of Sioux Falls, South Dakota and Matt (Makayla) Anderson of Hawarden; 15 great-grandchildren; and 3 great-great-grandchildren.

   Lydia was preceded in death by her parents, Ruben and Elfreda; husband, Peter; 2 brothers, Albert and Harold Buchmann; 2 sisters, Esther Mullinex and Ruth Wood; a grandson, Jason Anderson; and a son-in-law, Chuck Smith.
