Lotte was born April 22, 1930, in Defiance, IA to Paul and Hildegard (Arens) Solbach. She was born at home in their apartment above their meat market. They moved to Denison, IA where she and her younger brother Rolf grew up and attended school. Lotte, being the child of immigrants from Germany spoke only German in her young life and when she started school, she didn’t know English and had to learn as she attended school. She graduated high school and went to Mt. St. Claire college and graduated with a liberal arts degree. It was during this time that a handsome pharmacist named Jerry Streit was working in Denison. The two met at church, and that is when Lotte’s heart was stolen. She married Jerry at St. Rose of Lima Church on July 24, 1950, and moved to Hawarden to start their new life. They were blessed with 7 children during their marriage. Lotte loved her family with everything in her, she would be there for them when she could and prayed for them every night and would call the Carmelites for an “extra push” for prayers when needed as she was a devout Catholic. She was known for her e-mails that she would send out for everyone on the family’s birthday, anniversary of marriage and the anniversary of their passing along with a little story about them. Those were special times that you would watch for your own special e-mail and what memory she would write about you.
She loved to shop for gifts for her family and friends and put so much thought into each gift. She took pride in her decorating for the holidays and her table settings were beautiful.
She has resided at Northern Hills Assisted Living since 2016 where she made many new friends and formed many special relationships with staff as well. After she had been at Northern Hills a few years she was gifted a fish tank for companionship. She named her fish after Biblical figures and enjoyed watching them dart about the tank.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Jerry; her daughters, Stephanie and Mary; her granddaughter, Brienne; and daughter-in-law, Christine.
Left to cherish her memory are her children, Tom (Jeanne) Streit of Hawarden IA, Tim Streit of Merrill, IA, son-in-law Jim Mueller of Eagan, MN, Amy (Joe) Couture of Wisconsin, Lisa (Ray) Geary of Merrill, IA, Thad (Jamie) Streit of Mount Ayr IA; her grandchildren, Anya, Bristen, Whitney, Kayla, Nicole, Grayson, Tegan and Tanner; her great-grandchildren, Miranda, McKenna, Faylin, Cadence, Leland, Geno, Kennedy, Alexis, and Charlie; her brother, Rolf (Carlene) Solbach of Algona, IA; 4 nephews and a niece along with their families.
