IRETON, IOWA- Leon Rus, 73, of Ireton, died Saturday, October 5, 2013 at the Hawarden Regional Healthcare Hospital, following a month long battle with cancer.
Funeral service will be 10:00 a.m. Thursday at the Netherlands Reformed Congregation in Sioux Center, Iowa with Rev. G.J. Baan officiating. Burial will follow in the Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Ireton. Visitation will begin at noon Wednesday, with the family present from 6:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the Porter Funeral Home in Ireton. Condolences may be sent to www.porterfuneralhomes.com.
Leon Rus was born September 18, 1940 near Armour, South Dakota, the son of John and Katie (Zomer) Rus. He married Audrey VanDerVliet November 24, 1961 in Sioux Center, Iowa. They made their home in Grand Rapids, Michigan until 1965, when they purchased a trucking business and moved into Ireton, Iowa. They made their home there since and Leon has driven truck for over 52 years. The last years he hauled livestock and grain.
Leon was a member of the Netherlands Reformed Congregation in Sioux Center and a past member of the Ireton Fire Department. He enjoyed fishing, playing cards, and world trivia.
Survivors include his wife, Audrey; 3 children: son, Jeff (Amy) Rus and their children, Holly, Katie, and Bo of Sioux City, Iowa, son, Doug (April) Rus and their children, Alicia, Jon, Zane, and Jaxson of Long Grove,Iowa and daughter, Andrea (Ron) Britt and their children, Alli, Kylee, and Luke of LeMars, Iowa; his 4 brothers, Jake (Fran) Rus of Rock Valley, Iowa, Herman (Gert) Rus of Corsica, South Dakota, Elmer (Judy) Rus of Grand Rapids, Michigan, and his twin Lorn (Marilyn) Rus of Rock Valley, Iowa; and 3 sisters, Cora Starr of Marysville, Washington, Hermina Van Veldhuizen of Rock Valley, Iowa and Jen Van Bemden of Grand Rapids, Michigan.
Leon was preceded in death by his parents; step mother, Dena; sister, Nellie Fluit and her husband Tunis; and brothers-in-law, Arie Van Veldhuizen, Al Spaans, Alvin Starr, and Ike Van Bemden; and niece, Janice Spaans.
