Hawarden, Iowa~ Lawrence V. "Larry" Ruhland, 78, of Hawarden, died suddenly on Tuesday, May 27, 2014.
Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Hawarden with Father Doug Klein officiating. Burial will follow in the Grace Hill Cemetery. Visitation will be from noon to 3:00 p.m. Thursday at the Porter Funeral Home in Hawarden. Visitation with the family present will be from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. with a Prayer Service at 7:00 p.m. at the St. Mary's Catholic Church.
Lawrence V. "Larry" Ruhland was born September 16, 1935 on the family farm near Struble, Iowa, the son of Joseph and Marie (Gybertson) Ruhland. He attended school in Struble.
Larry married Mary Bohlke February 1, 1956 in Struble. Larry was a farmer all of his life farming near Struble, Chatsworth, and moving to the family farm near Hawarden in 1964. He also worked for 25 years in packing houses and also at Don's Ready Mix cement plant. After retiring from farming he owned his own trucking business which he later sold with his declining health. Larry and Mary moved into Hawarden in 2000.
He enjoyed his "gossip sessions" at Casey's, Quick Corner, and the grocery store where he would visit with his buddies. He loved his Allis Chalmers tractors, going on tractor rides, and planting his own potato patch to share with family and friends. Larry also enjoyed a good pinochle game.
Survivors include his wife of 58 years, Mary; six children, Russ of Hawarden, Mic of Akron, Jerry (Wendi) of Hawarden, Patti (Bruce) Ericson of Akron, Denise (Kelly) Beitelspacher of Akron and Joey Ruhland of Akron; 25 grandkids; 15 great-grandkids with 3 more on the way.
Larry was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Ed; and a son-in-law, Joe Loutsch.
