LaVonne Mydland

Inwood, IA: LaVonne Mydland, 90, of Inwood, died Wednesday, July 3, 2013 at Fellowship Village. Memorial Service will be 10:30 am Monday at Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Inwood. Private family urn burial will be at the Richland Cemetery prior to the service. Visitation with the family will be 2-4 pm Sunday at Porter Funeral Home, Inwood. The family prefers memorials be directed to Fellowship Village. Online condolences may be left for the family at www.porterfuneralhomes.com.

Marlys LaVonne was born February 28, 1923 at Canton, South Dakota, daughter of Griffith and Inez (Hotvet) Stensland. The family lived NW of Inwood where she attended country school and graduated from Inwood High School. She attended Black Hills Teacher College and taught in country school. On August 30, 1943, LaVonne was united in marriage to Harold Stanley Mydland at Our Saviors Lutheran Church, rural Inwood. They made their home NW of Inwood and lovingly raised their three children. Harold died April 8, 1962. LaVonne was Lyon County Clerk of District Court for 26 years and was appointed to the Iowa Racing and Gaming Commission in 1984 by Governor Terry Branstad. In 1988 she moved to Washington State (where both her daughters lived) and moved back to Inwood to Fellowship Village in 2010.

LaVonne was privileged to be involved in many activities including superintendent of Sunday School at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in earlier years; enjoyed being a 4-H leader; past President of Business and Professional Club; served on Iowa Judicial Nominating Committee for State Supreme Court Judges; member of Lyon County Historical Society; PEO Chapter JB; member of Trinity Lutheran Church; and volunteered at the Chamber of Commerce.

LaVonne will be lovingly remembered by her son, Gary (Betty) Mydland of Inwood; daughters, Cherl Schneider of Enumclaw, WA, and Lana (Mac) McLaughlin of Aurora, IN; and grandchildren, Matthew (Jessica) Mydland, Sonja Mydland, Jennifer Schneider, Christopher Schneider.

LaVonne was preceded in death by her husband, Harold; son-in-law, Terry Schneider; grandson, Jarrett McLaughlin; parents, Griffith and Inez Stensland; sister and brother-in-law, Dorothy and Norman Thorson.
