LaVonne Wiley was born on October 18, 1926 on a farm in rural Stanbury, Missouri as one of five children of Sam and Esther (Bryant) Wiley. After her education in Missouri, she was employed with the U.S. Civil Service that eventually led to 18 months as communication director for U.S. occupational forces in Okinawa. Upon her return to US soil, she accepted a position with Fry Manufacturing in Des Moines where she met her future husband, Glenn. The romance quickly developed into their marriage in 1951 and the couple headed for Hawarden and farmed northeast of town.
LaVonne was very involved in the family farming business from feeding threshing crews, tending to chickens and feedlot calves, driving tractors and watching feedlot gates. She was a dedicated mother of three.
Throughout her life, LaVonne was active in the Hawarden community and West Sioux school district. She was active in the organizations of the Boy and Girl Scout troops of Hawarden and the youth groups of the Hawarden Methodist Church. She was a room mother for all three of her children. LaVonne owned and operated the Red Flair beauty salon and The Family Tree clothing store in Hawarden. She was the bookkeeper for Valley View feedlots for 20 years before retiring and moving to town. Her retirement activities included her bridge club, maintaining an extensive home flower garden, being an avid book reader and meeting the daily challenge of the papers crossword puzzles.
LaVonne was noted for an annual sweet corn party that would approach 500 guests in some years.
Her greatest pride was her offspring, starting with her three kids and continuing all the way to her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
She is survived by her husband, Glenn; sons, Gary (Carla) of Lawton, Iowa and Larry (Carol) of Hawarden, Iowa; and daughter, Gayle of Sioux City, Iowa; Seven Grandchildren, Erika McWell, Erin (Shane) Smailey, Adam (Cari) Gregg, Holli (Miles) Rausch, Marissa Gregg, Brody (Roberta) Koopmans, and Corissa Koopmans; and Eight Great-Grandchildren, Noah and Micah McWell, Tyce and Asher Smailey, Jackson and Lauren Gregg, Ian and Ainsley Rausch.
