Hawarden, Iowa- Larry D. Opdahl, 71, of Hawarden, died Monday, March 10, 2014 at the Hudson Care and Rehab Center in Hudson, South Dakota.
A private family Mass of Christian Burial will be held at the St. Mary's Catholic Church in Hawarden with Father Doug Klein officiating on Friday, March 14, 2014.. Burial will be in the Grace Hill Cemetery in Hawarden. Visitation will be from noon to 3 p.m. Thursday at the Porter Funeral Home in Hawarden. Visitation with the family present will be from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Thursday at the St. Mary's Catholic Church. Larry Duane Opdahl was born January 15, 1943 in Sioux Center, Iowa, to Earling and Gertrude (Robinson) Opdahl. He was raised on a farm north of Ireton and attended grade school in Ireton. He later graduated from West Sioux High School in Hawarden in 1962.
Larry married Lynn Peterson at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Hawarden on November 13, 1963. Larry worked in carpentry his entire life. He built and remodeled many homes in the Hawarden area before he was hired by D & D Construction in Sioux City to be a building contractor. They built many homes in the Dakota Dunes.
When Larry wasn't doing woodworking in his free time, he enjoyed reading, playing cards, and collecting toy tractors. He occasionally went over the road trucking, taking Lynn or the boys along.
He is survived by his five children, Mark and wife Maria of Orange City, Missy and husband Jeff Eilts of Ireton, twin sons, Mike and wife Jennifer of Rochester, Minnesota and Matt and wife Connie of Sioux Center, and Molly Morgan of Hawarden; grandchildren, Mallory (Kirk) Bright, Maddy Eilts, Shelby, Brooklyn, Bianca, Chandler, Claire, Max, Mason, and Manny Opdahl, Megan and Grace Morgan; great-grandson, Tristan Bright; mother-in-law, Dorothy Peterson; and two sisters, Ruth Alexander and Janice Mallette.
Larry was preceded in death by his wife, Lynn, who died of pancreatic cancer on January 5, 1996; his parents; father-in-law, Henry Peterson; and sister-in-law, Carole Peterson.
