Hawarden, Iowa- Katherine Kots, 92, of Hawarden, formerly of rural Ireton, Iowa and Beresford, South Dakota, died Thursday, March 7, 2013 at the Hillcrest Health Care Services in Hawarden.
Funeral service will be 11:00 a.m. Monday at the Porter Funeral Home in Rock Valley, Iowa with Ministers Joe Hobbs, Mike Henry, and Anita Forsberg officiating. Burial will follow in the Valley View Cemetery. Visitation with the family will be one hour prior to the service and also at the luncheon following the committal.
Katherine Kots was born November 12, 1920 in Rock Valley, Iowa, the daughter of Tom and Sadie (Zwaan) Verdoorn. She married James M. Kots February 25, 1943 in Sioux Center, Iowa. They lived in the Maurice area and later lived near Hudson, South Dakota and Fairview, South Dakota before returning to the Ireton, Iowa area in 1974.
James died December 12, 1997. Katherine made her home in Beresford, South Dakota before moving to Hillcrest Health Care Services in Hawarden in 2011. She enjoyed sewing, singing hymns, and playing the organ. Katherine loved being around her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Survivors include her daughter, Sandra Carlson and husband Ron of Beresford, South Dakota; son, Gary Kots and wife Brenda of Ireton; a sister, Greta Veldkamp and husband Elmer of Jasper, Minnesota; 5 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.
Katherine was preceded in death by her parents; husband; son, James in infancy; a brother, Joe Verdoorn; and a sister, Ellen DeVries.
