HAWARDEN, IOWA ~ Joyce Arlene Schouten, 79, of Hawarden, died on Saturday, September 19, 2015 at the Hillcrest Health Care Center in Hawarden.
Memorial Service will be 11:00 a.m. Wednesday at the Christian Reformed Church in Hawarden with Rev. Mark Klompien officiating. Burial will be in the Grace Hill Cemetery beginning at 10:00 a.m. at the church. Visitation will begin at noon Tuesday, with the family present from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the church. The Porter Funeral Home in Hawarden is assisting the family. Condolences may be sent for the family at www.porterfuneralhomes.com. In lieu of flowers, the family prefers memorial be given to Ireton Christian School or Hospice of Siouxland.
Joyce Arlene Schouten was born September 25, 1935 in Leota, Minnesota to Lester and Bertha (Wittgren) Landaal. She attended various Christian schools as her father served as Christian school principal in a number of different communities. Joyce graduated from Western Christian High School in Hull.
She married Gerrit Schouten on January 11, 1957 in Ireton, Iowa. They raised their family on a farm near Hawarden. Gerrit passed away on September 8, 2008. In August of 2011, Joyce moved to the Hillcrest Health Care Center. Joyce was a very caring wife to Gerrit, a loving mother to her children and very much enjoyed her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
She was a member of the Hawarden Christian Reformed Church. She was a cook in the Alcester School System and later worked at Wee Care, a child day care center. Joyce volunteered at the Thrift Store and enjoyed reading, embroidery, and being in the Neighborhood Club.
Joyce is survived by her five children, Mike and wife Pearl of Sioux Center, Randy and wife Sharon of Hawarden, Doug and wife Danyel of Hudson, South Dakota, Karlinda and husband Bill Benda of Hawarden, and Rick and wife Jill of Sioux Center; a sister, Edith Vanden Berg of Sanborn, Iowa; sisters-in-law, Chris Schouten of Sioux Center and Jessie Landaal of Worthington, Minnesota; brother-in-law, Albert Boersma of Prinsburg, Minnesota; 18 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews.
Joyce was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Gerrit; an infant son; a sister; a brother; and two brothers in infancy.
