John Groeneweg

Rock Valley, IA: John C. Groeneweg, 77, of Hull, Iowa died Thursday, August 13, 2015 at Sioux Center Health in Sioux Center, Iowa. Funeral service will be held on Thursday, August 20, 2015 at 10:30 a.m. at First Christian Reformed Church with Rev. Matthew Haan officiating. Burial will follow at Valley View Cemetery. Visitation with the family present will be 6:00-8:00 p.m., Wednesday, August 19, 2015 at First Christian Reformed Church. Condolences for the family may be left online at www.porterfuneralhomes.com.

John was born July 8, 1938 and grew up on a farm near Fairview, South Dakota. He later moved with his parents to a farm between Hull and Rock Valley. He married Irene Caswell in Hull, May, 1958. The couple moved to the farm and raised three children there and on another place a mile south. Several years ago, he and Irene returned to the home place where they welcomed family and friends. They have been married for 57 years.

John enjoyed farming, music, riding motorcycle, and camping. He sang with a quartet for 12 years with Irene at the piano. He especially loved playing cards and other games with his grandchildren.

John served as a member (including President) of the Board of the Farmers Elevator for 17 years, as a member (including President) of the Board of Rock Valley Gas & Oil for 12 years, and as Elder of First CRC for 3 years. John supposedly retired but he continued to drive truck, haul silage, and farm his 80 acres. He also had his hands full keeping up with Irene, who was his partner in crime for 57 years.

He is survived by his wife Irene, three children and their families: Kevin and Dawn Groeneweg, and their children, Taylor and Connor of Golden, Colorado; Pam and Lyle Kooiker and their children, Jacqueline and Jamie of West Palm Beach, Florida; and Peggy and Daryl De Vos and their children, Megan, Morgan, and Brooke of Sioux Falls, South Dakota.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Cornelia and John H. Groeneweg.
