John DeWit

Rock Valley, IA: John E. De Wit, 93, of Rock Valley, died Monday, July 8, 2013 at Whispering Heights, Rock Valley. A funeral service will be 10:30 am Thursday at Calvin Christian Reformed Church in Rock Valley with Rev. Gideon Wamala officiating. Burial will follow at Valley View Cemetery. Visitation with the family present will be 6:30-8:30 pm Wednesday at Porter Funeral Home, Rock Valley. Online condolences may be left for the family at www.porterfuneralhomes.com.

John was born June 6, 1920 at Rock Valley, son of Evert and Jennie (Baker) De Wit. He married Irene Bajema on August 20, 1948 at Rock Valley. John farmed a while before becoming a feed salesman living at Sioux Falls and Colton, SD and moving back to Rock Valley in 1968. After retirement, John drove truck part-time for several years. He was an active member of Calvin Christian Reformed Church including being an Elder and in Men's Bible Study. He enjoyed listening to music and reading and will be remembered for his positive outlook and a good sense of humor. John moved to Whispering Heights on March 4, 2011 and was well taken care of by the staff.

Surviving relatives include his wife, Irene; children, Jean (Dennis) Calkhoven of Hull, IA, Sheri (Loren) Broek of Sioux Center, IA, Jay (Donna) De Wit of Hull, IA, Lori (Vyron) Hoff of Sioux Falls, SD; 11 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; brothers, Al (Ann) De Wit of Sioux Falls, SD, Don (Lou) De Wit of Rock Valley; Floyd (Bea) De Wit of Gilbert, AZ, Bernie (Kathy) De Wit of Sioux Center, IA; and sister-in-law, Mary De Wit of Sioux Falls, SD.

John was preceded in death by his parents, brothers, Henry "Bud" and Marv De Wit; and sisters-in-law, Clarice "Sis" and Eunice De Wit.
