HAWARDEN, IOWA- Johanna Elgersma, 90, of Hawarden, died Thursday, January 16, 2014 at the Hillcrest Health Care Center.
Funeral service will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Hawarden Christian Reformed Church in Hawarden with Pastor Doug De Groot officiating. Burial will follow in the Grace Hill Cemetery. Visitation will begin at noon Monday, with the family present from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Porter Funeral Home in Hawarden.
Johanna Elgersma was born February 11, 1923 south of Ireton, Iowa, the daughter of Bert and Eva (Vande Hoef) De Jager. She married William Elgersma June 12, 1945 in Hawarden, Iowa. Together they farmed in Union County, South Dakota. William died October 12, 1976.
Johanna remained on the farm until moving to Hawarden in 1981. She worked at Dakota Industries in Alcester and later as a cook at Morningside Manor. She cooked at Hillcrest Health Care Center until doing home health care for a time.
She was a member of the Christian Reformed Church and liked to volunteer at Hillcrest. She also enjoyed gardening, flowers, and birds.
Survivors include her daughter, Carolyn Elgersma of Byhalia, Mississippi; son, Alvin Elgersma of Alton, Iowa; sisters, Henrietta Johnson of Marshalltown, Iowa, Wilma Veltema of Hudsonville, Michigan, and Audrey Veltema of Jenison, Michigan; grandson, Andrew Elgersma of Sioux Falls, South Dakota; and step grandchildren, Ryan Solberg of Chicago, Illinois and Nicole Solberg of Enid, Oklahoma.
Johanna was preceded in death by her parents; husband; and brothers, Elmer, Clarence, and Donald De Jager.
The family requests memorials to Hospice of Siouxland or to Alzheimers Research.
