DOON, IOWA- Joawn (Joe) Henry Van Oort, 84, of Rock Valley, Iowa, formerly of Doon, died on Wednesday, July 26th, 2017 at the Whispering Heights in Rock Valley.
Memorial Service will be 11:00 a.m. Monday, July 31st at the Doon United Reformed Church with Candidate Stephen Regnerus officiating. Committal service will begin with a prayer service at 10:00 a.m. at the church with the burial to follow at the Hillside Cemetery at Doon. Visitation with the family will be from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. Sunday at the Porter Funeral Home in Rock Valley. Condolences may be sent to www.porterfuneralhomes.com. The family wishes memorials be directed to the Northwest Iowa Protestant Reformed School in Doon, Whispering Heights in Rock Valley, or to Sioux Center Health Hospice.
Joawn (Joe) Henry Van Oort was born June 4, 1933 in Middleburg, IA to Henry and Marietta (Jacobsma) Van Oort. He attended Middleburg country school and the Doon Christian School. Joe served in the US Army and was medically discharged during basic training.
He married the love of his life, Henrietta Van Tol on December 3, 1954 at the Doon Christian Reformed Church. They lived in Denver, CO for a brief time and then returned to northwest Iowa. They were blessed with 4 children, Glenn, Larry, Dawn, and Curt. The couple farmed near Doon until their retirement. His priorities were faith, family, farming, and fishing.
Survivors include his wife, Henrietta; three children and their families, Larry (Marcia) Van Oort of Doon, and their children, Rachel Van Oort, Katherine (Nate) Althoff, and David Van Oort, Dawn (Joe) Kraayenbrink of Rice, MN and their children, Jaime (Josh) Wirth, Jenna (Tyson) Metzger, and Jon Kraayenbrink, and Curt (Tanya) Van Oort of Brandon, SD and their children, Jordan, Brett, and Brock Van Oort; 5 great-grandchildren; brother, Vern of Doon; sister, Shirley Rens of Hull, IA; brother-in-law, Martin DeWit of Orange City, IA; sister-in-law, Elizabeth (Robert) Crowley of Springfield, IL; brothers-in-law, Cornelius (Trudi) Van Tol, Muskegon, MI, William (Laura) Van Tol, Wyoming, MI, Arthur (Nancy) Van Tol, Grandville, MI, Clarence (Nancy) Van Tol, Franklin, NC, Hubert (Lois) Van Tol, Rochester, NY, and Jerry (Anne) Van Tol, Westminster, MA; also many nephews and nieces.
Joe was preceded in death by his parents; infant son, Glenn; sister, Joy DeWit; sister-in-law, Sharon Van Oort; and brother-in-law, Gerald Rens.
