Rock Valley, Iowa: Joann Van Maanen, 49, of Rock Valley, Iowa died Wednesday, February 5, 2014, at her home and surrounded by her family after an 11 year battle with cancer. Mass of Christian Burial will be 2:00 p.m., Saturday, February 8, 2014 at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Rock Valley with Father Doug Klein officiating. Burial will follow at the St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery in Rock Valley. Visitation with the family will be 6:00-8:00 p.m., Friday, February 7, 2014 at Porter Funeral Home in Rock Valley. Joann Marie (Gacke) Van Maanen was born April 23, 1964 in Canton, South Dakota, daughter of Cletus and Lorraine (Bosler) Gacke. Joann graduated from West Lyon High School and St. Luke's Nursing School in Sioux City. She married her best friend, Lyle Van Maanen, on June 14, 1985. Joann continued to be a loving nurse and caring for others until the fall of 2013. Her patience, courage, and faith, strengthened Joann during her 11 year battle with cancer. Family was everything to Joann. She also enjoyed quilting and had a love for nature. Joann was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, where she taught catechism for 20 years.
Joann is survived by her husband, Lyle Van Maanen, of Rock Valley; four daughters, Kayla (Eli) Erickson of Beresford, South Dakota; Dana (Jonathon) Brink of Rock Valley; Briana (Robert) Radcliffe of Boyden, Iowa; and Alexa Van Maanen of Rock Valley; two grandchildren, Jaelyn and Aubrey Brink; parents, Cletus and Lorraine Gacke of Sioux City, Iowa; brother, Randy (Carla) Gacke of Inwood, Iowa; and three sisters, Judi (Scott) Driesen of Rock Valley; Linda (Roger) Wagner of Sioux Falls, South Dakota and Nancy (Frank) Marino of Sioux City.
