Hudsonville, Michigan: Jennie Elgersma, 92, of Hudsonville, Michigan died Sunday, December 28, 2014 at The Laurels of Hudsonville. A funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Friday, January 2, 2015 at the Porter Funeral Home in Ireton, Iowa with Rev. Norlyn Van Beek officiating. Jennie Elgersma was born April 16, 1922 near Alcester, South Dakota to Andrew and Nancy (Vander Zee) Elgersma. She attended country school near Beresford, South Dakota and graduated from Western Christian High School in Hull, Iowa in 1941. She then attended Calvin College in Grand Rapids, MI for one year. From 1942-1943, Jennie taught Christian Elementary School in Terra Ceia, North Carolina. Jennie then lived at home until 1945 when she went to Pine Rest Psychopathic Hospital in Cutlerville, Michigan. In 1987, she transferred to a variety of rest homes.
She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, William and Asa Elgersma; and one sister, Annie DeVries. Jennie is survived by one brother, Bernard (Viola) Elgersma of Edgerton, Minnesota; several nephews and nieces; and a very special friend, Dawn Vander Meer, who was chosen by God to watch over Jennies care, physically, socially, and spiritually over the last few years as a frequent visitor in the rest home.
