Jean Dorothy Hubers, daughter of Frank and Mina (Bylsma) Gerritsen, was born May 23, 1937 at Rock Valley, Iowa. Jean attended school through the 8th grade, but continued to love learning and reading throughout her life. Jean was united in marriage with Merlyn “Mert” Hubers on May 8, 1965 at Canton, South Dakota. Together the couple made their home near Rock Valley, Iowa. Jean worked as a bookkeeper for B&L Plumbing and Heating in Hull, Iowa where she was known to run a “tight ship” in the office, but everyone loved and respected her.
Jean worked hard during the day, but made sure her nights were spent at home with her family who she dearly loved. She grew up coming out of the Great Depression so she knew how to be thrifty and stretch a dollar. Jean enjoyed cats, darning socks and going on walks. She will be remembered by many for her daily walks around Rock Valley. It didn’t matter if it was sunny, cloudy, raining, or snowing. If the sun was up, Jean was walking. She would walk several miles a day, picking up cans and other “treasures” along the way. Jean was a member of the First Reformed Church in Rock Valley.
She is survived by her husband of 55 years, Mert; 3 children, Michael Hubers of Rock Valley, Jodi Sears of Rock Valley, and Mark Hubers of Seattle, Washington; and 3 grandchildren, Jesse, Justin, and Joseph Sears. Jean was preceded in death by her parents, Frank and Mina; granddaughter, Juli Sears; and brother, Jack Gerritsen.
