Janice C. Hamilton

Hudson, SD: Janice C. Hamilton, 84, of Hudson, South Dakota, passed away following a brief illness on Thursday, February 17, 2022, at Sanford USD Medical Center in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. Funeral service will be held Saturday, February 26, at 10:00 AM at Trinity Lutheran Church, LCMS, of Hawarden, Iowa with Rev. Joshua Lowe officiating. Burial will follow at Grace Hill Cemetery of Hawarden. Visitation, with the family present, will be held prior to the funeral from 9-10 AM at the church. Memorials may be given to Trinity Lutheran Church, LCMS. Porter Funeral Home of Hawarden is assisting the family with arrangements. The service will be livestreamed on the Trinity Lutheran Church Facebook page.

   Janice Charlene (Zimmerman) Hamilton, daughter of William and Arlene (Webert) Zimmerman, was born August 28, 1937 at Ireton, Iowa. Janice lived on a farm near Ireton and later moved to Hawarden, Iowa. She graduated from Hawarden High School. On May 25, 1959, Janice was united in marriage with Richard Hamilton. They made their home in Hawarden until 1961 when they moved to their farm near Hudson, South Dakota.

   Janice worked at Central Cafe, The Telephone Company in Hawarden, The Bistro, and K-Products. Janice, known to her family as “Farm Grandma”, loved spending time with her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She enjoyed cooking and baking. Janice made the best ham balls, banana bread, and chocolate chip cookies. At Christmas she would make her “million dollar” fudge for everyone. Janice also enjoyed gardening; she grew the biggest onions and potatoes. One of her favorite past times was watching & feeding the birds; her favorite was the Red Cardinal. Janice was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Hawarden.

   Janice is survived by her three children, Tamara (Chris) Lewis, David Hamilton and Mark Hamilton all of Hudson; two grandchildren, Josh Lewis and his wife Amanda, and Cory Lewis, both of Hudson; three great grandchildren, Jayco, Jayden, and Ayvah Lewis; brother, Bill Zimmerman of Phoenix, Arizona; two sisters, Pat (Mark) DeSutter of Hawarden and Karon (Chuck) Tiltrum of Aurora, South Dakota; brother-in-law, John Schmitz of Arlington, South Dakota; and many nieces and nephews.

   Janice was preceded in death by her husband, Richard Hamilton; infant daughter, Kimberly; parents, William and Arlene Zimmerman; and two sisters, Sharon Schmitz and Marilyn Zimmerman.
