Hermina Van Veldhuizen

ROCK VALLEY, IOWA ~ Hermina Rus-Spaans-Van Veldhuizen, 90, of Rock Valley, passed away on Friday, November 22, 2024, at Whispering Heights in Rock Valley, Iowa.

 Funeral Service will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, November 27, 2024, at the Netherlands Reformed Congregation in Corsica, South Dakota with Rev. J.J. Witvoet officiating. Burial will follow at the Graceland Cemetery in Corsica with Rev. J. Slingerland officiating. Visitation with the family will be Tuesday, November 26, 2024, from 5:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at the Porter Funeral Home in Rock Valley. Condolences may be sent to www.porterfuneralhomes.com. The family requests, in lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Netherlands Reformed Christian School of Rock Valley, Iowa.

 Hermina was born November 4, 1934, at the home of her parents, John and Katie (Zomer) Rus at Armour, South Dakota. On January 7, 1953, she was united in marriage to Albert C. Spaans. They made their home on a farm near Corsica, South Dakota. To this union were born 3 sons and 3 daughters. Albert passed away on July 4, 1972.

 Hermina was united in marriage to Arie Van Veldhuizen on April 19, 1977. To this union were born one son and one daughter. They lived near Doon, Iowa and later near Rock Valley, Iowa. Over the years, Hermina was a homemaker and cleaned houses for others. Arie passed away on February 24, 2010.

 Hermina is survived by sons, Harlan (Sue) Spaans, David (Corinne) Spaans, Larry (Bonnie) Spaans, and Robert (Tasha) Van Veldhuizen; daughter, Rebecca (Thane) Fluit; stepson, James (Sheri) Van Veldhuizen; stepdaughters, Sue (John) Bauder, Kerry (Dick) Spitler, Arlyce (Pete) Den Boer, Julie (Gary) Klarenbeek, Avis (Alan) Bakker, and Paula (Tom) Maassen; son-in-law, Ken (Lenora) Van Hill; sister, Mrs. Jennie (Ike) Van Bemden; brother, Lorn (Marilyn) Rus; sisters-in-law, Mrs. Elmer (Judy) Rus, Mrs. Leon (Audrey) Rus, Mrs. Cornie (Pauline) Spaans, Mrs. Rev. John (Joanne) Spaans, Mrs. Jim (Kathy) Spaans, Mrs. Adrian (Betty) Spaans, Mrs. Marvin (Rosalie) Spaans, Mrs. Ben (Betty) Spaans, and Mrs. Cornie (Bernice) Van Veldhuizen; brother-in-law, Leonard Spaans; 44 grandchildren; and many great and great-great-grandchildren.

 Hermina was preceded in death by her parents; stepmother, Dena Rus; her husbands; her daughters, Janice Spaans, Thelma Spaans and baby daughter; stepson, Joel Van Veldhuizen; stepdaughter, Jane Van Hill; grandsons, Les, Steve, Craig, and Curtis Spaans; granddaughter, Carla Spaans; brothers, Jake (Francis) Rus, Herman (Gertrude) Rus, Elmer Rus, and Leon Rus; sisters, Cora (Alvin) Star and Nellie (Teunis) Fluit; stepbrother, Gerrit (Bernice) Hup; plus many brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law.
