HAWARDEN, IOWA~ Herman H. Holtkamp, 87, of Hawarden, died on Saturday, November 19, 2016 at the Hillcrest Health Care Center in Hawarden.
Funeral Service will be 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, November 23, 2016 at the Trinity Lutheran Church, LCMS in Hawarden with Rev. Michael Boothby officiating. Burial will follow in the Grace Hill Cemetery in Hawarden with military rites by the Two Oaks American Legion Post 254 of Hawarden. Visitation will begin at noon Tuesday, with a prayer service at 7:00 p.m. followed by visitation with the family until 8:00 p.m. at the Porter Funeral Home in Hawarden. Herman Herbert Holtkamp was born in Union County, South Dakota on February 11, 1929 to Frank and Amelia (Wendel) Holtkamp. He was baptized and confirmed at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Hawarden, Iowa. He attended the Williams Country School in Union County.
Herman served with the US Army from August of 1951 to May of 1953 during the Korean War. He was a Platoon Sergeant and received a Bronze Star Medal along with other service medals.
On December 27, 1951, Herman and Esther Ludwig were united in marriage at the Peace Lutheran Church at Alcester, South Dakota. Upon his return from military service they farmed in Union County. They retired from farming and moved into Hawarden but Herman continued to go out and help many area farmers.
He was a life-long member of the Trinity Lutheran Church where he served as a trustee and on the finance board. He was a member of the Hawarden American Legion Post 254 and enjoyed fishing, wood crafts, and tinkering with John Deere tractors.
Herman is survived by his wife Esther; daughter, Rhoda Lockhorst and husband Gary of Hawarden; brother, Walter Holtkamp and wife Jo of Alcester; two grandchildren, Eric Lockhorst and wife Robin and their son, Mason, and Rachel Stahlecker and her husband Josh and their daughters, Emery, Calliope, and Aubrey.
Herman was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Wendel Holtkamp and his wife Lavonne; three sisters, Margaret Heiman and husband Burdette, Dorothy Heiman and husband Gus, and Louise Holtkamp; and a sister-in-law, Gladys Holtkamp.
