Helena Niemeyer

Doon, IA: Helena (De Bruin) Niemeyer, 91, of Doon, Iowa, passed away Wednesday, June 28, 2023, at Lyon Specialty Care in Rock Rapids, Iowa. A funeral service will be held Monday, July 3, at 1:30 PM at the First Reformed Church of Doon with Rev. Peter Kolb officiating. The service can be livestreamed at https://www.youtube.com/@firstreformedchurchdoon6302/streams. Burial will follow at Hillside Cemetery of Doon. Visitation, with the family present, will be held Sunday, July 2, from 2:00-4:00 PM at Porter Funeral Home of Rock Valley. Condolences may be left for the family at www.porterfuneralhomes.com.

   Helena (De Bruin) Niemeyer was born March 18, 1932, to John Peter and Maria (Beukhof) De Bruin. She was born on the family home near Maurice, Iowa, and attended country school until the family moved to Alvord, Iowa, where she graduated from the 8^th grade. Helena was united in marriage with Gerrit Niemeyer on November 29, 1950. After Gerrit finished his military service, the couple moved to the Doon, Iowa area where they farmed until retiring to Doon in 1981.

   Helena was a faithful member of First Reformed Church of Doon and was active in Bible studies and Ladies Aide. She loved spending time with family and attending grandchildren and great-grandchildren’s various activities and special programs. She enjoyed coffee time with her friends, crocheting, and reading. Helena loved traveling with Gerrit, family, and friends. She was also an avid Iowa Hawkeye Basketball fan and watched them play every chance she could.

   Helena is survived by 5 children, Glenda Hellenga, Judy (Carl) Jansma, Ardell (Colleen) Niemeyer, Donna (Wendell) Rensink, and Lisa (Roger) De Bey; daughter-in-law, Marilyn Niemeyer; 17 grandchildren; 47 great-grandchildren; 5 great-great-grandchildren; and sisters-in-law, Marlys De Bruin and Arlene De Bruin.

   Helena was preceded in death by her parents, John and Maria; husband, Gerrit; son, Harlan Niemeyer; son-in-law, Brian Hellenga; and siblings, Jen (Hank) Teunissen, Clara (Dan) De Vries, Tom (Martha) De Bruin, infant sister Marie De Bruin, Albert (Henrietta) De Bruin, Heinie (Etta) De Bruin, Pete (Hermina) De Bruin, Garrett De Bruin, Jake De Bruin, Marie (Gilbert) Postma, and Irene (Pete) Reitsma.
